WEATHERFORD, Okla. (Nov. 19) -- Dauntae Williams and Shane Carroll combined for 37 points and No. 18-ranked Central Oklahoma remained unbeaten with a 95-75 drubbing of Mid-America Christian here Friday afternoon.
The Bronchos improved to 4-0 and were never threatened on the first day of the Southwestern Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce Classic. UCO returns Saturday to take on Arlington Baptist at 3 p.m.
“We were a little too sloppy and didn't play with a lot of intensity, especially in the first half,” UCO coach Terry Evans said. “We came out and played a little better in the second half, but it definitely wasn't our best effort.”
The Bronchos had a season-high 19 steals and forced 32 turnovers, scoring 34 points off those MACU miscues. UCO struggled with turnovers itself, finishing with a season-worse 21.
Williams hit four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 19 points while adding seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Carroll chipped in 18 points off the bench on 8-of-12 shooting and tied a career high with five steals.
The Bronchos also got a career-high 12 points from Tucker Phillips, with Tyler Phillips contributing 11 points, four assists and three steals and Jarrod McDaniel 10 points.
UCO had 11 steals in the first half alone to open up a 49-34 lead as Tucker Phillips had 10 of his 12 points.
The Bronchos went in front for good just four minutes into the contest when Tony Ross made a pair of free throws break a 7-7 deadlock, with a Carroll layup and Tucker Phillips tip-in quickly pushing the lead to 13-7.
The lead reached double digits at 30-20 on a Tucker Phillips 3-pointer with 8:17 remaining and it peaked at 17 on three occasions before the Bronchos settled for the 15-point halftime advantage.
UCO's lead peaked at 24 (73-49) on a Williams layup with 9:13 left to play, but the Evangels came back with a 18-5 run to cut the deficit to 11 at 78-67 with 4:16 remaining.
But there would be no miracle comeback as Carroll drove in for a layup 15 seconds later to start a 7-0 run that made it 85-67 and the Bronchos coasted in from there.
