UCO Ends Texas Trip With Another Sweep

Bronchos Beat Southern Arkansas For Second Time This Season

DENTON, Texas – Central Oklahoma wrapped up its weekend at the Denton Volleyfest with a second consecutive three-set sweep, taking down Southern Arkansas in the finale Saturday evening.

The Bronchos improved to 6-3 with the win. UCO won 25-22, 25-14, and 25-17 to get it done. Central also beat Westminster (Utah) 3-0 Saturday morning.

"That was a good finish and one we needed," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "With each win we're becoming better and cleaning up our game. We played well in both matches today and that really helped us. We have to continue that momentum into next week."

Central Oklahoma is co-hosting with Oklahoma Baptist a conference crossover event next week in Edmond and Shawnee. The Bronchos will play four matches in three days at Hamilton Field House.

In Saturday's finale against Southern Arkansas, the second meeting of the season between the two programs, the Bronchos handled business from start to finish.

The Bronchos scored three straight points to take a 16-14 lead in the middle of the first set and held on to win 25-22. UCO led 8-1 in the second set and never looked back in securing a 25-14 win to go ahead 2-0 in the match. And it was a wire-to-wire win in the third as well as the Bronchos won 25-17 to clinch the sweep.

Riley Roberts led the way for the Bronchos, dishing out 36 assists to the offense that hit .381, a season best. Roberts was her best in the opening set, dishing out 16 assists on 18 UCO kills. The senior setter added seven digs, four kills, and three blocks in the match.

Myla Unterweger and Georgia Ahlert led the way Saturday morning against Westminster, and it was more of the same Saturday evening against SAU. Both sophomores, Unterweger had 13 kills and hit .345 on 29 attacks. Ahlert added 10 kills on a blistering .526 pace in 19 attacks.

UCO's defense shined Saturday evening as well, with 24 block-assists in the match. Kate Wells, who added five kills, led the way with seven blocks. Unterweger had six, and Ahlert, Roberts, and Taylor Fenton each had three. Freshman Mya McCoy added two kills and two blocks.

The back row worked together all night too. Kaitlyn Parrott led the way with 12 digs and Morgan Manning had eight. Roberts and Jordyn Baker both had seven digs in the match.

Central Oklahoma plays Southeastern Oklahoma State and Northeastern State on Thursday, East Central on Friday, and Ouachita Baptist on Saturday at Hamilton Field House. A total of 10 teams will play 17 matches over the three days in Edmond and Shawnee.
