Bronchos Claim Two Wins in MIAA/GAC Crossover

No. 22-ranked UCO Tops Two Intrastate Rivals

EDMOND – Myla Unterweger and Georgia Ahlert combined to hit .388 with 52 kills in guiding Central Oklahoma past a pair of intrastate rivals Thursday on the first day of the MIAA/GAC Crossover Tournament at Hamilton Field House. 
 
The No. 22-ranked Bronchos turned back Southeastern Oklahoma 25-9, 25-23, 23-25, 25-18 to start the day, then cruised to a 25-13, 25-19, 25-20 sweep of Northeastern State in the evening. UCO, now 8-3, returns Friday to take on East Central at 6 p.m. 
 
Unterweger had a .351 attack percentage on the day with 30 kills and four errors in 74 attempts, while Ahlert collected 22 kills in 42 tries with just three miscues in hitting a sizzling .452 to pace UCO's offensive attack. 
 
"It wasn't always pretty, but we got the job done," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "I saw a lot of good things in both matches and we just need to continue working on being more consistent, both offensively and defensively." 
 
Unterweger hit .333 with a career-high 20 kills while adding 11 digs in the opening win over SOSU. Ahlert hit .500 with 12 kills to go along with three solo blocks. 
 
The Bronchos also got 13 kills and four assisted blocks from Taylor Fenton, with Kate Wells chipping in eight kills and five total blocks. Riley Roberts handed out a career-best 45 assists in addition to collecting 10 digs, four kills and two aces. 
 
Kaitlyn Parrott led the back row defense with 27 digs, 10 of those coming in the narrow second set win. Morgan Manning added 16 digs and four aces. 
 
UCO actually trailed early in the lopsided first set before getting two Fenton kills in a 6-1 run that turned a 4-2 deficit into an 8-5 lead. The Bronchos pulled steadily away from there, ripping off nine unanswered points – three on Manning aces – during one stretch and Roberts polished off the rout with another ace. 
 
The Bronchos were ahead most of the way in the second set before SOSU rallied to take a series of two-point leads, the final one at 22-20. UCO responded with a 4-0 spurt behind kills from Fenton and Caroline Clayton along with a combined block by Fenton and Wells. 
 
That put Central on top 24-20 and Clayton followed two SOSU points with a shot down the middle to end it. 
 
The Savage Storm staved off a late UCO comeback to take the third set and led in the early going of the fourth before the Bronchos surged in front to stay. 
 
A Fenton kill gave Central the lead for good at 11-10 and Unterweger had four kills the rest of the way to close out the match. 
 
Ahlert, Unterweger and Wells had 10 kills apiece in the sweep of NSU, each hitting .400 or better. Wells had a .600 attack percentage with 10 kills and one error in 15 tries, while Ahlert both had 10 kills in 20 attacks with two miscues in hitting .400.  
 
Caroline Clayton contributed eight kills and Roberts had another stellar all-around outing with 38 assists, four kills, seven digs and an ace. Parrott finished with 20 digs and four assists, with Emma Halstead chipping in 10 digs. 
 
UCO trailed 5-4 in the first set before reeling off seven straight points to take control. Parrott put down two aces in that run, Ahlert finished it off with a big kill at the net to put the Bronchos ahead 11-5 and the RiverHawks had no answer. 
 
It was close again in the second set until UCO used a 9-0 run to turn a 12-10 lead into a 21-10 cushion and the Bronchos coasted in from there. 
 
The third set was tied 5-5 before a Wells kill, Parrott ace and Clayton kill put Central on top 8-5. Mya McCoy's shot down the line pushed the advantage to 20-13 and the Bronchos fended off a late NSU rally to finish it off.
