Nick Canales Leads UCO In Missouri

UCO Is Third In Team Race After First Two Rounds

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Nick Canales has the 36-hole lead at Missouri Western's Holiday Inn Express Invitational at St. Joseph Country Club after two under-par rounds on Monday.

Central Oklahoma is in third place in the team standings.

UCO shot a 7-over-par 287 Monday morning before coming back with a 3-under 277 in the afternoon. The 36-hole 564 is 11 shots back of leader Central Missouri (276-277 – 553). Iowa Western (561) is also in front of UCO. Minnesota Crookston (566) and Washburn (567) are right behind the Bronchos.

Canales opened with a 1-under-par 69 before warming up in the afternoon with a 5-under-par 65.

Rhett Hughes is four shots back in fifth place. He shot an even-par 70 Monday morning before a 2-under 68 in the afternoon round. William Whorton posted back-to-back 72s on Monday. John Helzer debuted for Central and posted a 7-over 77 and a 2-over 72 in his first two career rounds.

Ty Hyatt is also in the lineup and shot a 150 (76-74). Jack Ensey is playing as an individual and shot a 153 (76-77) in his first two career rounds.

UCO will tee off Tuesday morning in the third and final round.

Canales continued his strong start to the season. After starting his day 3-over through six, a birdie on No. 10 turned things around. He played the next 12 holes 4-under after to finish with a 69. In the second round, Canales sank seven birdie putts and nine par putts to card a 65.

Hughes also had a hiccup on the first hole of the day, doubling the Par 4 sixth hole. But he responded with four birdies in the round and finished even par. In the second round, a 30 on the back nine that included four birdies and an eagle on the Par 5 18th helped him shoot a 68.

Whorton made one birdie in the first round and then four in the second round in firing back-to-back 2-over 72s.
