UCO Finishes Second In Michigan

Bronchos Earn Runner-Up Finish At Site Of NCAA Regional Championship

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Central Oklahoma moved up one spot in the team standings and finished second at the Regional Preview hosted by Grand Valley State at The Meadows Golf Club this week.

UCO posted a 54-hole 869 (290-289-290) this week. Host Grand Valley State won the team title with an 862, seven shots ahead of the Bronchos. Wayne State (872), Washburn (876), and Ashland (878) rounded out the top five individuals.

"We found our way up to first place but didn't finish the job," UCO head men's golf coach Derrick Thompson said. "Wish we could have, but this was a tough course. We still played well overall and we know we need to be ready for it again in May."

Grand Valley State is hosting the NCAA Central/Midwest Regional Championships in May at The Meadows.

William Whorton moved up the individual leaderboard and finished tied for third with a 1-under-par 212. The freshman shot back-to-back rounds of even-par 71 yesterday and finished with a 1-under 70 on Tuesday.

Nick Canales dipped from first place after 36 holes to tied for fifth at the end of the tournament with a 213. After rounds of 70 & 68 on Monday, Canales shot a 4-over-par 75 on Tuesday.

Ty Hyatt surged up the leaderboard moving 30 spots to land in a tie for 22nd individually. He shot a 7-over 220. After rounds of 78 & 73 on Monday, Hyatt posted a 2-under-par 69 on Tuesday.

Bryant Polhill (226) rounded out the UCO scoring with rounds of 73, 77, and 76. Rhett Hughes was also in the lineup and shot a 244 (76-88-80).

Central Oklahoma will take a week off after playing its first two tournaments in eight days. The Bronchos return Sept. 28-29 for Missouri Western's Holiday Inn Express Invitational at St. Joseph Country Club.

UCO is hosting the Skip Wagnon Invitational Oct. 5-6 at KickingBird Golf Course in Edmond and will wrap up the fall season with the Newman Fall Invitational at Terradyne Country Club in Andover, Kansas.
