Bronchos Drop MIAA Opener

Central Oklahoma Loses Five-Setter At Northwest Missouri

MARYVILLE, Mo. – No. 22 Central Oklahoma lost its MIAA opener Thursday night in a rough, five-set road match at Northwest Missouri.
 
The Bronchos are 10-4 on the season and now 0-1 in league play. UCO is back on the court Friday night at No. 8 Missouri Western in St. Joseph.
 
"We had a chance in the fifth but we just didn't finish the job," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "We didn't play well overall but we still had a chance to win. We have to learn from this and get better from it so we can close games out when we have the chance."
 
Central Oklahoma lost the first set 25-18 but then flipped the script for a 25-18 win in the second set to tie the match, 1-1. The third and fourth were similar. The host Bearcats won 25-17 before the traveling Bronchos won 25-19 to tie the match 2-2.
 
UCO took a 9-4 lead in the fifth before NWMSU rattled off nine straight points for a 13-9 lead. The Bronchos then reeled off four straight to tie it one last time, 13-13. Northwest got the final two points to get the win.
 
Myla Unterweger and Caroline Clayton led Central's attack. The Bronchos had 51 kills and hit .154 in the match. Riley Roberts dished out 36 assists and had a team-high 16 digs. Kaitlyn Parrott dug up 15 attacks on the back row.
 
UCO was ahead by as many as two in the first set. Northwest took the lead midway through and it slowly grew to the 25-18 loss for the Bronchos. Unterweger (four) and Clayton (three) led the way in the first set.
 
Central broke a 5-5 tie in the second set and slowly pulled away until winning 25-18. Kate Wells led the Bronchos with four kills in the second set.
 
Mya McCoy had one kill in the opening set, two kills in the second set, then led the Bronchos with four kills on four attacks in the third set. Unterweger and Clayton had two each in the set but the Bronchos were down 8-2 early in the third and never recovered.
 
UCO scored the first two in the fifth, led 4-2 on a kill by Moore, then 9-4 on an Ahlert kill. Northwest's 9-0 run that followed included six attack errors by the Bronchos. Clayton and Ahlert had kills with two Bearcat errors to get the match to 13-13, but one more Northwest kill made it match point and UCO mishandled the ball on the final point.
 
Central Oklahoma continues its road trip Friday night at Missouri Western. The Bronchos return to Hamilton Field House next week, playing Missouri Southern on Thursday night and No. 25 Central Missouri on Friday night for Homecoming Week at UCO.
 
Unterweger led a well-rounded effort for Central Oklahoma in the fourth set. The sophomore had three kills. Clayton, Wells, Roberts, and Georgia Ahlert each had two and Brylee Moore added one kill.
 
Wells led a big charge on defense with five block-assists. The Bronchos had five total blocks in the set. Moore had three block-assists and Roberts and Unterweger each had one. UCO led by five early, 9-4, and controlled the set to a 25-19 win.
