UCO Claims Fifth Straight win

Bronchos Fend Off East Central in MIAA/GAC Crossover

EDMOND – Clutch kills by Brylee Moore and Myla Unterweger enabled No. 22-ranked Central Oklahoma to break away from a late fourth-set tie and fend off feisty East Central Friday night on the second day of the MIAA/GAC Crossover Tournament. 
 
The two teams were deadlocked at 22 in the final set when Moore hit a missile down the sideline to put the Bronchos ahead. Unterweger followed with a deep shot down the middle and the Tigers committed a hitting error on match point as UCO prevailed 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22. 
 
It was the fifth straight win for the Bronchos, now 9-3 on the season. UCO returns to Hamilton Field House at 1 p.m. Saturday to take on Ouachita Baptist in the final match of the three-day event. 
 
"It was a struggle," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We've got some injuries that really affects our depth, but the team is playing hard and we just have to keep moving forward." 
 
Georgia Ahlert had another strong outing at the net to lead the Bronchos, hitting .423 with 12 kills and just one error in 26 attacks to go along with three total blocks. Unterweger finished with 11 kills and two assisted blocks, while Moore came off the bench to hit .348 with 10 kills, nine digs and three assisted blocks. 
 
Riley Roberts directed the offensive attack, finishing with 40 assists, 12 digs and two service aces. Kaitlyn Parrott came up huge in the back row with a season-high 33 digs in addition to serving up three aces, with Morgan Manning adding 11 digs. 
 
Ahlert had five kills in the first set win that was back-and-forth all the way. Kate Wells and Caroline Clayton teamed up for a block that broke a 19-19 tie to put UCO on top for good, with Clayton adding two kills the rest of the way. 
 
The Bronchos appeared in control in the second set after going up 9-3 on a Wells kill, but ECU battled back to tie it at 17-all. Back-to-back kills by Wells and Moore put UCO ahead to stay and consecutive aces by Manning ended it. 
 
The Tigers won another tight battle in the third set and were up 8-4 in the fourth before Central used a 5-0 run to move ahead 9-8 on Mya McCoy's hard shot down the middle. It was a 17-16 lead when Unterweger put down three kills during another 5-0 spurt that gave the Bronchos 22-16 cushion. 
 
ECU answered back with six straight points to tie it, but Moore and Unterweger came through with their big kills and UCO had its sixth straight home win.
