Bronchos Batter Bearcats In Game 1

Central Oklahoma Wins 11-3 Thursday In Maryville

MARYVILLE, Mo. – An early offensive outburst paved the way for Central Oklahoma to take an 11-3 Game 1 victory at No. 23 Northwest Missouri Thursday afternoon.

UCO improved to 25-23 with the win and is now 16-18 in the MIAA. Game 2 is scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m. and the regular season finale will follow on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Bronchos scored five runs on three hits in the top of the first inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead and it was really all about two swings of the bat.

Drake Lee hit a two-run home run and Elijah Alexander followed with a three-run homer. Colton Ayres drew a leadoff walk and scored on Lee's shot out of the park. Carson Taylor singled and Haden O'Toole drew a walk before Alexander's big fly.

Danny Satterlee then took to the mound with a 5-0 lead and the junior right-hander would put together an incredible start to give UCO even more to rave about on Thursday. Satterlee recorded five no-hit innings. One batter reached on an error in the second and Satterlee plunked another in the third, but the Broncho arm was dominant in every other at bat.

A third UCO homer came in the sixth when Luke Stout hit a solo shot to lead off the inning. Lee added an RBI single to score Gage Gilchrist and give Satterlee and the Bronchos a 7-0 lead.

In the sixth, Northwest led off with a single to end the no-hit bid. However, the next batter hit into a double play. Satterlee got one more out and only needed four pitches to get through the sixth with his 7-0 lead.

The Bronchos added one more in the seventh when Kade Sheldon's sacrifice bunt allowed Taylor to score. He doubled to lead off the inning and then two consecutive sac bunts allowed him to score and make it 8-0.

Satterlee kept it going in the bottom of the seventh. He issued a one-out walk but three flyouts in the inning kept it quick and it was still 8-0, UCO.

Lee scored Gilchrist again, this time on a sac fly, to make it 9-0.

Northwest finally got through Satterlee in the eighth. Back-to-back one-out singles were followed by a sac-fly to end the shutout and Cortt Gentry came on in relief of Satterlee. He gave up a two-run home run and it was 9-3. After a walk to the next batter, Gage Norvell followed and got the final out of the inning with UCO leading 9-3.

Satterlee's final line was 7.2 innings pitched with two runs on three hits. He struck out four batters. Satterlee got 10 groundouts and eight flyouts.

The Bronchos added two more for good measure in the top of the ninth. Gilchrist's RBI single scored Stout to make it 10-3 and Ayres' RBI single scored Gilchrist to make it the final, 11-3.

Norvell got three outs on five pitches in the bottom of the ninth for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma had 15 hits in the game on Thursday and all from six players. Three had three hits and three had two hits. Lee (3-for-5), Taylor (3-for-4), and Gilchrist (3-for-5) all collected three hits in the game. Ayres (2-for-3), Stout (2-for-4), and Alexander (2-for-5) each had two hits.
