UCO Slips In Game 2 At Northwest

Bronchos And Bearcats Will Play For Series On Final Day Of Regular Season

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Central Oklahoma let a late lead slip away Friday and lost 11-10 to Northwest Missouri in Game 2 of the MIAA series.

UCO is 25-24 now on the year and 16-19 in the MIAA. Saturday's Game 3 is not just for the series after the Bronchos won Game 1 on Thursday, but Saturday is also the final day of the regular season. Central Oklahoma is hosting the MIAA Baseball Championship next week in Edmond and the Bronchos will play on Wednesday in the first round. Northwest Missouri (35-15, 25-10) will open in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Central jumped out to an early lead Friday just as it did on Thursday. The Bronchos scored three runs before the second out of the game was recorded. UCO rode that early momentum to leads throughout the game, 3-0, 4-1, 5-4, 8-5, but a late rally ruined the day.

Northwest Missouri scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth to go ahead 11-8. The Bronchos got two solo home runs in the ninth and had a runner in scoring position before the final out was recorded.

UCO had 15 hits in the game and five of them were for extra bases. Drake Lee and Trevor Rowe hit home runs, the two in the ninth, and Elijah Alexander, Gage Gilchrist, and Noah Smallwood all had a double each.

Alexander went 3-for-6, Rowe, Kade Sheldon, and Gilchrist each had two hits. Colton Ayres, Carson Taylory, Lee, and Smallwood all had one hit each.

The Bronchos started Brody Berlowitz on Friday and the sophomore right-hander threw 4.0 innings, allowing four runs on six hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out one.

Chase Yarger came on in relief and threw 3.0 innings, recording three strikeouts. He gave up three runs on three hits and three walks. Yarger walked the leadoff and gave up a double to start the eight before the end of his day.

Mylan Childers came on in relief and gave up three runs on one hit and a pair of walks. Childers recorded one out. Then Trent Gerber entered with the bases loaded and gave up a grand slam. He got the final two outs after giving up another hit and getting one strikeout.

Ayres and Lee scored on Rowe's single to center and Rowe later scored on a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the top of the first inning to give UCO a 3-0 lead.

Taylor's RBI single to left in the second scored Ayres for a second time and the Bronchos led 4-0. Gilchrist's double to left in the third inning scored Stout to give the Bronchos a 5-3 lead.

Taylor helped again with a sacrifice-fly in the fifth to make it 6-4. Smallwood scored on the play. The Bronchos added one more in the inning when Rowe's groundout scored Ayres for a third time in the game to make it 7-4.

Lee scored on an error by the Northwest catcher in the seventh to make it 8-5. He homered in the ninth to try and get the Bronchos back in the game. His solo shot made it 11-9. Rowe followed with one of his own to make it 11-10. Alexander then doubled with two outs but the Bronchos couldn't get the tying run home.

Game 3 is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday. The Bronchos are tied for eighth place with Washburn entering the final day of the regular season. The two will meet Wednesday, May 6 in Edmond in the first round of the MIAA Baseball Championship. Saturday's results will determine which team will be the home team in the game. Washburn owns the tiebreaker after winning 2 of 3 in Edmond against the Bronchos the first weekend in March.
