Bronchos Batter Lions In Edmond

Central Oklahoma Wins 18-3 In Seven-Inning Run Rule

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma scored early and often, including home runs in each of the first four innings, as the Bronchos clobbered Arkansas – Fort Smith 18-3 Friday afternoon in Game 1 of the MIAA series at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO is 21-20 with the win and now 12-15 in the MIAA. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. and the series finale is Sunday at 12 p.m.

The Bronchos tied a season high with 19 hits. Central's two triples and five homers are the most this year. Only last weekend's 27-3 win over Newman had more doubles, with seven on Friday one shy of that season high. The 18 runs scored is also the second most this season.

UCO trailed 1-0 going to the bottom of the first inning, but it was very soon 6-1. Central led 9-1 after two, 11-2 after three, and 15-2 after four innings. Neither team scored in the fifth, and it was 18-3 after six just before the Bronchos closed out the run-rule win.

Drake Lee went 4-for-5 and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Carson Taylor was 4-for-5 and a home run shy of the cycle. Noah Smallwood went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs.

Colton Ayres had two hits, a double and a triple, Trevor Rowe had two hits, both doubles, Elijah Alexander had two hits, including one home run, and Kade Sheldon also had a pair of hits on Friday, a double and a home run.

The Bronchos had 19 total hits and 14 of them were for extra bases. All nine players that started in the lineup scored at least a run. Lee scored three times while Ayres, Caleb Castle, Smallwood, Alexander, and Taylor each scored twice.

Danny Satterlee went 6.0 innings in the start and struck out seven batters on the day. He allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits. Conner Chambers came on to pitch the seventh and got three strikeouts around loading the bases with a hit, a walk, and a hit batter.

Central Oklahoma returns Saturday for Game 2 with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. The Bronchos are looking to win their third MIAA series of the year this weekend.
