UCO Takes Fort Smith Series With Second Run-Rule Win

Bronchos Win 17-7 In Seven Innings Saturday After 18-3 Win Friday

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma won the series against Arkansas Fort Smith with a second run-rule victory in as many days at Wendell Simmons Field Saturday.

UCO 17, UAFS 7.

The Bronchos improved to 22-20 on the season with the win and are now 13-15 in the MIAA. UCO will go for the series sweep on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.

For the second day in a row, Fort Smith got on the board in the top of the first and led 2-0. The Bronchos quickly turned it around with a three-run first to take the lead, but then UAFS responded with five in the fourth and led 7-3. The Lions wouldn't score again.

UCO put up a nine-run fifth and a five-run sixth to gain the 10-run lead needed for the run rule, then got the final three outs to put it away.

Michael Lopez picked up the win out of the bullpen for his efforts. Kamden Thompson got the start and threw 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks. Trent Gerber got one out in the fourth but gave up three runs on two hits and two walks.

Lopez got UCO out of the inning, then threw the fifth too. He issued one walk but struck out two batters and didn't give up a hit.

Cortt Gentry replaced Lopez in the sixth after the walk. He got a double play and a strikeout to get UCO out of the sixth inning. Tristan Wittau started the seventh and got two quick strikeouts before walking the next two batters. Mylan Childers came on and also walked a batter but got a game-ending groundout to get out of the jam and get the Bronchos the series win.

Carson Taylor led the Bronchos at the plate again on Saturday. The junior third baseman went 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs, and four runs scored. Caleb Castle and Drake Lee both went 2-for-4. Lee had three RBIs and Castle had one. Both of them also scored twice.

Luke Stout and Kade Sheldon added extra base hits with both getting doubles. Colton Ayres, Haden O'Toole, Elijah Alexander, and Cade Mills all had joined them with one hit each to help the Bronchos to 14 hits in the game.
