Bronchos Beat Washburn In Series Finale

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma wrapped up its MIAA series against Washburn with a 10-2 win Sunday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos improved to 11-9 overall on the season with the win, which snapped a three-game losing streak. UCO is also 2-4 in the MIAA.

After dropping the first two games of the series, Central Oklahoma came out swinging on Sunday. The Bronchos tied the game 1-1 in the third and took a 3-1 lead in the fourth. Still leading 3-2 in the sixth, UCO made it 8-2 with a five-run frame bolstered by Caleb Castle's grand slam. The Bronchos added two more in the eighth for the final 10-2 count.

Logan Taylor got the start for the Bronchos and the win to improve to 1-1 on the season. The junior right-hander threw 5.0 innings, struck out three batters, and got through his day allowing just two runs on six hits and a walk.

Mylan Childers threw 2.0 innings out of the bullpen and struck out two batters. Tristan Wittau tossed one inning and also struck out two. And Brody Berlowitz finished the game in the ninth, also striking out two batters. The UCO bullpen gave up just three hits, one for each pitcher over the final four innings.

UCO tied the game 1-1 in the third when Luke Stout laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Colton Ayres. In the fourth, Elijah Alexander smacked an 0-2 pitch over the fence in right center to give the Bronchos the lead they would never relinquish.  Ayres followed with his own sac-bunt that scored Cade Mills to make it 3-1.

Mills got the scoring started in the sixth with an RBI double that scored Alexander before Castle's grand slam to left field made it 8-2, UCO.

Castle came back in the eighth with a solo home run to make it 9-2. The Bronchos got their final run on an RBI double by Carson Taylor that scored Drake Lee.

Central Oklahoma does not have a midweek matchup this week and will be home again for another MIAA series next weekend. The Bronchos host Emporia State for three games beginning Friday evening at Wendell Simmons Field.
