Central Drops Series Opener With Emporia

Bronchos Lose 9-6 In Game 1, Return Saturday At 2 p.m. For Game 2

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma led twice but couldn't finish the job Friday in a 9-6 setback against Emporia State in the first of three MIAA games this weekend at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO is now 11-10 on the season following the loss and 2-5 in the MIAA. The Bronchos will play Emporia State Saturday at 2 p.m. and wrap up the series Sunday at noon.

On Friday, the Bronchos fell behind 4-0 but a five-run third put the home team in front. Central Oklahoma went back in front in the fifth, 6-5, but couldn't get another across the board.

Chase Yarger took the loss in the game out of the bullpen. He threw two innings and struck out one batter but it was his two runs, only one earned, that allowed Emporia to take the lead for good.

Danny Satterlee got the start and threw 4.0 innings, striking out four batters. The junior right-hander gave up five runs on six hits and a pair of walks.

Mylan Childers faced two batters in the seventh and hit the first and walked the second. Zack Hudspeth followed him out of the bullpen and nearly got out of a bases-loaded jam, but a wild pitch allowed one to score. Hudspeth threw 3.0 innings and gave up one more while striking out four on the day.

Drake Lee led the Bronchos with a pair of hits. Elijah Alexander, Carson Taylor, Wyatt Yetter, and Cade Mills all had one hit. Yetter's double was the only extra-base hit of the day for the Bronchos.

Trailing 4-0 in the third, Lee singled up the middle to score Mills and get the Bronchos on the board. Two more runs scored on an Alexander single when a fielding error occurred on the same play. Colton Ayres and Lee crossed the plate to make it 4-3.

Yetter then got two RBIs on one fielder's choice later in the inning. With the bases loaded, a groundball to short looked like it could be an inning-ending double play. However, Taylor was safe at second and a throw home was too late to catch Alexander. Luke Stout scored easily and Alexander's run made it 5-4, Central Oklahoma.

UCO got one more in the fifth to go up 6-5. Taylor singled and advanced to third on Yetter's double. Mills grounded out to second on the next play and Taylor scored.

Friday's loss by the Bronchos was the first to Emporia State since 2023. UCO swept the season series in both 2024 and 2025 and brought a six-game win streak into this weekend's series.

Game 2 is Saturday at 2 p.m.
