UCO Drops Opener With Washburn

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma jumped out to a huge lead Friday against Washburn but the Bronchos gave up more over the course of the near four-hour game and lost 19-11 in Game 1 of the three-game MIAA series at Wendell Simmons Field.
 
UCO is now 10-8 on the season with the loss and 1-3 in the MIAA. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. with Game 3 Sunday at noon.
 
Central Oklahoma scored nine runs on six hits in the bottom of the first inning to take a big lead. Wyatt Yetter drew a bases loaded walk to score Caleb Castle, who doubled earlier. Cade Mills his a two-RBI double to score Drake Lee and Noah Smallwood. Haden O'Toole then hit a two-RBI single to score Yetter and Mills.
 
When Colton Ayres came up for the second time in the inning, he scored Kade Sheldon with an RBI single then Castle hit a two-run home run to give the Bronchos a 9-0 lead.
 
However, Washburn answered with seven in the top fo the second to chase UCO starter Danny Satterlee and turn the game right back into a competitive battle. With one more in the third and another in the fourth, it was suddenly tied, 9-9.
 
Washburn eventually led 15-9 going to the bottom of the seventh. UCO answered with two more in the bottom half, but Washburn wasn't done and added four in the eighth to make it the final, 19-11.
 
Satterlee finished after 1.2 innings of work, allowing seven runs on seven hits and three walks. Chase Yarger, who took the loss in the game, threw 4.0 innings and gave up four runs on six hits.
 
Zack Hudspeth gave up one run in just 1/3 of an inning, Blake DeLong and Michael Lopez both appeared but didn't record an out. Caden Hinther threw one inning and gave up two runs on two hits. Cade Perkins threw 2/3 of an inning and gave up two more runs on just one hit. Jett Farmer closed the game and recorded four outs on nine pitches, striking out a pair of batters.
