Central Stumbles At NSU

Bronchos Lose 5-3 In Tahlequah, Return Home For Fort Hays Series

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Central Oklahoma lost an early lead and couldn't recover in a 5-3 setback at Northeastern State Tuesday afternoon.

UCO is now 13-15 overall on the season and 4-10 in the MIAA with the loss. The Bronchos return home this weekend and will play Fort Hays State for a three-game MIAA series beginning Friday at Wendell Simmons Field.

Tuesday in Tahlequah, in the first of three midweek MIAA contests against the Riverhawks, Central jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Noah Smallwood hit a leadoff home run on the second pitch of the game, Jackson Archambeau hit another solo shot in the top of the second inning, and Cade Mills' RBI groundout scored Carson Taylor to make it 3-0 in the top of the third.

But the Bronchos couldn't find any more offense. And NSU had an answer in the fourth.

The host Riverhawks led off with back-to-back singles and then hit a game-tying three-run home run. With two outs and a runner on first, an error by the Bronchos allowed one run to score. Then a single up the middle scored another and it was 5-3.

NSU didn't have a hit prior to the fourth inning and only had three more after that. UCO only had two hits after the fourth and couldn't find its way back in the game.

Brody Berlowitz got the start for the Bronchos and finished with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched. The sophomore is 2-1 on the season. He allowed four runs, three earned, on three hits and a pair of walks.

Caden Hinther came on in the fourth and got UCO out of the inning, allowing one run on one hit. He struck out an NSU batter for the only out he recorded. Chase Yarger threw two innings and struck out two batters, allowing no runs on two hits and a walk. Zack Hudspeth threw the final two innings and struck out three batters while only allowing one hit.

Smallwood went 3-for-5 on the day with the home run, a triple, and a single. Taylor and Elijah Alexander both had doubles in the game. Trevor Rowe added one base hit and Archambeau had the other hit with his solo homer.
