UCO Drops Opener At Pitt State

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Central Oklahoma dropped Game 1 at Pittsburg State Friday afternoon, losing 12-8 in the MIAA series opener.

UCO is now 12-13 overall on the season following the loss and the Bronchos are 3-8 in MIAA play. Pitt State, which is ranked No. 2 in the country in this week's ABCA coaches' poll and No. 1 in two media polls, improved to 24-2 overall and 13-2 in league play.

Danny Satterlee got the start for the Bronchos on Friday and had a 1-0 lead thanks to Caleb Castle's RBI single in the top of the first inning that scored Noah Smallwood. It was 2-2 going to the bottom of the third and 3-3 going to the bottom of the fourth, but that's when Pitt began to pull away.

Satterlee threw 3.2 innings and gave up six runs on 10 hits and a walk. He struck out three. Zack Hudspeth (1.2), Michael Lopez (1.2) and Caden Hinther (1.0) all came out of the bullpen. Pitt finished with 12 runs on 20 hits and four walks. Hinther added a fourth strikeout for the Bronchos.

Smallwood went 2-for-5 in a leadoff role. He scored twice – the first run of the game on Castle's single and again in the third on Colton Ayres' single that tied it up, 2-2.

Gage Gilchrist added a third RBI single for the Bronchos in the fourth inning to score Drake Lee. That tied the game, 3-3.

Trevor Rowe, who went 3-for-4 on the day, hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning that scored Lee and Carson Taylor. Lee then hit a two-run homer in the ninth that scored Taylor and made it the final, 12-8.

Smallwood, Ayres, and Lee all had two hits in the game. Rowe led the way with three. Castle and Gilchrist had one each.

Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State will play Game 2 Saturday at 2 p.m. and wrap up the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
