UCO Run-Rules Gorillas In Pittsburg

Bronchos Beat Top-Ranked Pitt State 13-3 In Seven Innings Saturday

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Central Oklahoma had its best offensive output of the season Saturday afternoon that led to a 13-3 run-rule victory over Pittsburg State.
 
The Bronchos improved to 13-13 on the season with the win and are now 4-8 in league play. Pitt State, ranked No. 1 in the county in two media polls and No. 2 in the country in the latest coaches' poll, is now 24-3 overall and 13-3 in the MIAA.
 
UCO had a season-high 17 hits and scored a season-high 13 runs on Saturday. The Bronchos had seven doubles and a pair of home runs to go with eight more base hits.
 
Noah Smallwood led the way. Making his 10th start of the season and 15th overall appearance through 26 games, the junior went 4-for-5 with three doubles and a home run. The leadoff second baseman had five RBIs and scored three runs on the day.
 
Drake Lee also had a four-hit day, collecting one double and a homer to go with a pair of singles. Lee had three RBIs and scored three runs as well.
 
Colton Ayres, Trevor Rowe, and Kade Sheldon all had two hits in Saturday's game. Elijah Alexander, Carson Taylor, and Gage Gilchrist all had one hit each.
 
UCO got through Saturday's run-rule using just two pitchers. Kamden Thompson got the start and the win for the Bronchos. He allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out a pair of batters. Mylan Childers threw the final two innings and didn't give up a hit while walking two.
 
The Bronchos jumped out to a lead in the top of the first inning for the second day in a row. Smallwood scored the game's first run on a passed ball, then Lee scored Ayres with an RBI single and Alexander scored Lee the same way to give the Bronchos a 3-0 lead.
 
Lee scored Sheldon in the second on a double down the line to make it 4-2, then scored on Rowe's single to make it 5-2. Smallwood hit his homer, a solo shot to center, in the fourth inning to push the lead to 6-3. His two-RBI double in the fifth scored Sheldon and Taylor to make it 8-3.
 
Lee hit his home run in the sixth to make it 9-3, then Smallwood was at it again in the seventh, hitting another two-RBI double to score Sheldon and Gilchrist and give the Bronchos an 11-3 lead.
 
UCO added runs on Ayres' single and a Rowe groundout to get to the final, 13-3.
 
Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State will play for the series Sunday afternoon. Game 3 is scheduled for 1 p.m. UCO plays at Northeastern State on Tuesday and will make its return to Wendell Simmons Field in Edmond next weekend against Fort Hays State.
