No. 17 Bronchos Top No. 12 Oklahoma Christian

OKLAHOMA CITY  – Sherri Mason's solo home run in the third inning gave Central Oklahoma a lead it wouldn't relinquish and the No. 17-ranked Bronchos went on to knock off No. 12 Oklahoma Christian 5-2 Tuesday evening at Tom Heath Field.

The Bronchos improved to 22-5 with their fourth straight win.

Carleigh Kinnaird went the distance in the circle for UCO, scattering eight hits while striking out six in moving to 10-1 on the season.

Kennedy Clark went 3-for-4 to lead a nine-hit attack, while Mason had two hits.

"Proud of our process as a team," head coach Sam Maples said. "We had production from everyone in different ways and got the key hits when we needed them to keep the pressure on them.

"We pitched really well and facing a talented team like Oklahoma Christian will help us prepare for our conference opener this weekend."

OC broke on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first when a leadoff bunt was followed by a three-base throwing error, but the Bronchos answered back in the top of the second when Kennedy Clark led off with a home run to left-center field.

Central surged ahead in the third with a pair of runs. Sherri Mason got the inning started with a homer down the left field line and Rylee Anglen singled throught the right side before Rylee Lemos reached on a fielder's choice.

Brooklyn Ryan followed with a bunt single to load the bases with no outs and Jenna Jobe's two-out walk forced in a run to make it 3-1.

Ryan came up with two big defensive plays in the fourth. The center fielder sprinted to left-center to make a running catch for the first out and then made a diving grab of a low line drive to end the inning when OC had two runners on.

That became a 4-1 advantage in the fifth when Haley Gallo drew a one-out walk, Clark followed with a bloop base hit to right-center and Jobe drove a run-scoring single to right.

The Eagles got a run back in the bottom of that frame and UCO escaped more damage when Kinnaird got the final out on a lazy fly ball to right field with the bases loaded.z

The Bronchos added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Mason ripped a two-out RBI double to right-center field. Hannah Demoff walked with two outs, then Brooklyn Lyles singled before Mason came through.

OC put two runners on with one out but Lyles extinguised that threat by snaring a line drive at first and stepping on the bag to complete a game-ending double play.

The Bronchos open MIAA play this weekend, hosting Washburn for a 2 p.m. doubleheader Friday and Central Missouri for a noon twinbill Saturday.
