Bronchos Beat Hornets In Series Finale

Central Oklahoma Wins Game 3 10-6 Sunday In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma fought off a sweep with a 10-6 win over Emporia State Sunday afternoon in the final game of a three-game MIAA series at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO improved to 12-11 on the season with the win and is now 3-6 in the MIAA. The Bronchos will have Monday off before hosting Rogers State in an MIAA contest at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City Tuesday night.

"We did a good job of today of battling at the plate," UCO head baseball coach Robbie Rea said. "We had more runs than hits and you need to have a good approach at the plate to pull that off. Glad we ended this weekend with a win because we needed it."

Sunday's conditions were less than ideal for anyone on the field. Winds sustained around 30 miles per hour with heavier gusts throughout the day.

Emporia went in front 2-0 in the first inning, but the Bronchos got a 3-2 lead in the second and never trailed again. The Bronchos scored all three in the second off just one hit.

Haden O'Toole led off with a walk and moved to second on a balk. Wyatt Yetter reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second as O'Toole kept a rundown going between second and third long enough to draw an interference call that awarded him third safely.

After Gage Gilchrist flied out, Cade Mills laid down a bunt and reached safely as O'Toole beat out the throw home for the first run of the inning. Kade Sheldon followed with a sac-bunt and Yetter scored to tie it up, 2-2. Colton Ayres then had the only hit of the inning, a double down the right field line, that scored Mills to give the Bronchos the 3-2 lead.

UCO would put up four runs on two hits in the enxt inning to take command of the game.

Elijah Alexander was hit by a pitch with one out, then stole second. He scored on O'Toole's single to center field that made it 4-2. Yetter was also hit by a pitch, then with two on, Gilchrist got his first hit as a Broncho and it was a deep shot over the fence in right field for a three-run home run that gave the Bronchos a 7-2 lead.

UCO got one more in the fifth when Yetter's sacrifice fly scored Alexander to make it 8-3. The Bronchos added another in the sixth when Sheldon scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-6. Central got its final run on one swing of the bat when Yetter homered out to right in the seventh to make it the final, 10-6.

Logan Taylor got the start for the Bronchos and was solid through four innings of work. He allowed just the two, first-inning runs on six hits and a pair of walks. Taylor struck out five batters on the day.

Bron Farr came out of the bullpen and threw 1.2 innings, striking out three batters. He allowed three runs on two hits. Brody Berlowitz threw 3 1/3 to earn a save, allowing just one run on three hits. Berlowitz struck out two batters.

While UCO went 1-2 this weekend, the Bronchos struck out 32 Hornet batters in three games.

Central Oklahoma and Rogers State will play three midweek matchups over the next five weeks to complete their three-game MIAA series. UCO and Northeastern State will do the same. The first against Rogers is Tuesday in Oklahoma City. The Bronchos will visit RSU March 31 and host the Hillcats in Edmond April 14.
