Bronchos Turned Back By Tritons

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma got in an early hole and couldn't find the offense to dig out of it Saturday afternoon in a 12-1 run-rule defeat to Missouri – St. Louis in the Edmond First Pitch Classic at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO is 2-2 on this opening week. The Bronchos play East Central (1-2) Sunday at 1 p.m. in the final game of the eighth annual baseball festival.

Central Oklahoma starting pitcher Danny Satterlee made his season debut Saturday and got a 1-2-3 first inning. But UMSL followed with an incredible eight-run second inning. The Tritons from St. Louis were beat 24-1 on Thursday morning and 10-0 Friday evening.

After scoring eight in the second, UMSL scored one in the third, two in the fourth, and one more in the fifth. UCO got its only run in the bottom of the seventh trying to fend off the run rule.

Satterlee struck out two batters and got four flyouts to get through his two innings. Conner Chambers was the first out of relief and the true freshman gave up three runs in 1 1/3 innings of work. UMSL got one run off a Chambers wild pitch in the third and a two more on a two-run home run in the fourth. John Demcher threw the next 1 2/3, allowing the final run in the fifth. Cortt Gentry threw a three-up, three-down sixth and Gage Norvell got out of a jam with a strikeout and two groundouts in a two-hit, one-walk seventh inning.

Elijah Alexander, Carson Taylor, and Caleb Castle each had two hits. Noah Smallwood and Logan Firgens had one each. Taylor and Smallwood had doubles. But those eight hits were it for the Bronchos.

Luke Stout scored the only run in the bottom of the seventh inning. He pinch-hit for Smallwood and drew a walk. He moved up to second on a wild pitch and to third on a Benicio Diaz groundout. Firgens hit an infield single after that to score Stout and make it 12-1.

UCO and East Central play Sunday at 1 p.m. in the final game of the Edmond First Pitch Classic at Wendell Simmons Field. The Bronchos lost to ECU 7-4 on Thursday evening.
