UCO Drops First Pitch Classic Opener Thursday Night

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma had an early lead and another one midway through its first game of the Edmond First Pitch Classic Thursday but the offense was stifled for the final four innings and the Bronchos lost 7-4 to East Central.

The Bronchos are 1-1 two games into the season and are back against Southeastern Oklahoma State Friday at 1 p.m. Central Oklahoma also plays Missouri St. Louis Saturday and has a rematch with East Central Sunday afternoon. Thursday's loss snaps a 17-game win streak UCO had in the series against ECU, which last won in 2012.

Central Oklahoma came out swinging in the first. Jackson Archambeau gave Central a 1-0 lead scoring Kade Sheldon, who led off with a single. Elijah Alexander scored Archambeau with a third straight hit for the Bronchos.

East Central tied it up, 2-2, in the top of the second and took its first lead, 3-2, with a solo home run in the fourth.

The Bronchos got the lead back in the fifth. Noah Smallwood had a pinch-hit triple to left center that scored Alexander. Trevor Rowe followed that with a single to score Smallwood and give Central Oklahoma a 4-3 lead. Unfortunately, Rowe's single would be the last hit of the game for the Bronchos.

East Central scored twice in the seventh to go back in front, then added two in the eighth for insurance and won 7-4.

Sheldon added another double for Central's only other base hit earlier. UCO had seven hits and none were after the fifth inning.

Central Oklahoma used eight pitchers in the game. Braxton Jones got the start and struck out nine batters in four innings of work. He had two groundouts and one flyout. He gave up four hits, three runs (one earned) and two walks. Jones also hit one batter.

Mylan Childers came out of the UCO bullpen first and struck out all six batters he faced, getting the Bronchos through the fifth and sixth innings quickly and unscathed.

Chase Yarger followed and gave up the tying run. He walked the leadoff and ECU got reached on an error after that. Yarger got the Tigers to hit into a double play, then Blake DeLong came on with two outs in the inning and a runner on third. He gave up back-to-back singles, balked, and then walked a batter. Cortt Gentry replaced DeLong and after a walk that scored the game-winning run, recorded a strikeout to end the inning with UCO down 5-4.

Trent Gerber gave up two runs on walk, hit batter, and wild pitch. He threw 1/3 of an inning. Jackson MacWilliams threw 2/3 and gave up a walk and a hit. Zack Hudspeth threw the ninth and got a 1-2-3 inning with one strikeout.
