Bronchos Lose Slugfest With Southeastern

Central Oklahoma Falls 14-12 In Offensive Battle

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma and Southeastern Oklahoma State competed in a marathon offensive slugfest Tuesday night at Wendell Simmons Field and the Bronchos came out on the wrong end of a 14-12 decision in the non-conference game.

UCO is now 9-5 on the season following the loss in its final non-conference game of the year. Southeastern is 8-5.

"We knew tonight was going to be hard on pitchers for both teams and they just got the better of us," UCO head baseball coach Robbie Rea said. "We thought we had the offense to get it done but they just kept finding a way to respond."

The teams combined for 26 runs on 29 hits in Tuesday's game. Southeastern grabbed an early 2-0 lead but the Bronchos went in front, 4-3 and held the lead for most of the game. But a seventh-inning rally by the visiting Savage Storm from Durant, Oklahoma that included three home runs put the Bronchos behind and UCO couldn't recover.

The Bronchos put up 14 hits in the game, including five for extra bases and one home run. Luke Stout, Drake Lee, and Noah Smallwood all had doubles, Smallwood added a triple, and Colton Ayres hit a three-run home run.

Ayres went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Stout was 3-for-6. Smallwood went 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored.

Caleb Castle also went 2-for-5, while Carson Taylor, Lee, Trevor Rowe, and Cade Mills all had one hit in the game.

UCO used 10 pitchers in the bullpen game.

John Demcher got his first career start and gave up two runs on three hits and a walk in the first inning. He struck out two batters in the opening frame. Zack Hudspeth got a scoreless second inning with three strikeouts. Cortt Gentry threw the third and gave up one run on two hits and a walk. He struck out one batter.

Conner Chambers and Cade Perkins both made an appearance in the top of the fourth inning and did not record an out. Chambers gave up two runs on two walks. Perkins gave up one run on three hits and a hit batter. Trent Gerber came on and got UCO out of the fourth and also through the fifth. He gave up one run on one hit and a walk while recording one strikeout.

Michael Lopez also made an appearance but did not record an out. He gave up two runs on two walks. Blake DeLong got the Bronchos out of the sixth and gave up one run on one hit and struck out two batters.

Chase Yarger came on to pitch the seventh and UCO had a 12-10 lead in the game. But this is when things went awry. The junior right-hander gave up a single, a two-run homer, and two more solo home runs – four runs on four hits. He also walked a batter. Yarger (1-2) did strikeout three SE players.

Tristan Wittau pitched the eighth and ninth and struck out two batters in two frames, giving up just one hit and a walk.

Central Oklahoma is now 9-5 on the season. The Bronchos have dropped consecutive games for the first time this year. UCO begins MIAA play later this week. Central is at Missouri Western for a three-game series beginning Thursday afternoon. The two will play Thursday at 3 p.m., Friday at 2 p.m., and Saturday at 1 p.m.
