Balk-off Win For Bronchos

Central Oklahoma Beats Drury 5-4 With Walkoff Balk In Game 1 Of Series

EDMOND – A rare bases loaded balk with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Central Oklahoma a 5-4 victory over No. 17 Drury Friday evening in a non-conference game at Wendell Simmons Field.

Central Oklahoma improved to 8-3 with the win. Drury is 4-1 after the loss. The teams will play Game 2 Saturday at 2 p.m. before wrapping up the series with Game 3 Sunday at 12 p.m.

UCO trailed 1-0 in the top of the first and spent most of the game playing from behind. It grew to 3-0 before the Bronchos scored once each in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Drury went back in front, 4-3, in the top of the ninth, but the Bronchos responded.

Drury closer Sam Peterson came onto pitch with two saves in two appearances on the season. But he hit Elijah Alexander in the first at bat. Peterson did record a strikeout after that, but then Caleb Castle singled, moving Alexander to third, and putting the first force of pressure on the Panthers from Springfield, Missouri.

A wild pitch followed and Alexander scored to tie the game. Then Colton Ayres was hit by a pitch. Then Luke Stout was hit by a pitch (for the third time in the game).

Drury changed pitchers again and Markell Dixon got a flyout he caught in foul territory for the second out. With Drake Lee in the batters box, UCO was either going to win it with a walkoff for the second time this season, or play extra innings.

Lee fouled off the first pitch, then watched two balls come in outside of the strike zone. As Dixon began to deliver the 2-1 pitch, a balk was called and the Castle trotted home for the game-winning run.

The Bronchos got two runs on just one hit in the ninth to win it. UCO had just six hits in the game. Kade Sheldon had two, and Carson Taylor, Lee, Alexander, and Castle all had one each. All six were singles.

Brody Berlowitz picked up the win and is 2-0 on the season. The UCO closer gave up one run on two hits in the ninth.

Braxton Jones got the start for the Bronchos and a second no decision in three starts this season. The sophomore right-hander threw 6.0 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and a pair of walks. He struck out seven batters and has 26 on the season in 16.0 innings of work.

John Demcher struck out one in the seventh. He came back for the eighth but hit the leadoff. Cade Perkins was up next and he gave up a hit and a walk before Chase Yarger followed him out of the bullpen. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Yarger struck out two and got a flyout to keep the game 3-2.

Berlowitz gave up a leadoff single and a one-out single. A sacrifice-fly made it 4-3 Drury.

UCO got its first run on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ayres and Stout were hit by pitches to leadoff, then Lee drew a walk. Sheldon hit an RBI single to right field to score Ayres. Stout was out on the play trying to score to end the inning.

In the seventh, Alexander led off with an infield single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a Castle groundout. He scored a Drury fielding error at shortstop to make it 3-2.

Taylor led off the eighth getting hit by a pitch and advanced to second on another Drury error when the catcher sailed his pickoff attempt into right field. Haden O'Toole then pinch-ran for Taylor and he scored on a Sheldon single to right center to make it 3-3 going to the ninth.
