Gabe Johnson Named MIAA Wrestler of the Week

Central Oklahoma Senior Improved To 15-0 With Technical Fall Win Sunday In Edmond

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Central Oklahoma senior Gabe Johnson was named MIAA Wrestler of the Week the league announced Tuesday.

Johnson, who is from Choctaw, has won two national championships for the Bronchos. He is a three-time All-American. He's won 106 matches as a Broncho, is 15-0 this season, and has won 28 consecutive matches overall. Johnson's win on Sunday improved his career record inside Hamilton Field House to 25-1 with the only career home loss the regional final his freshman season.

With all that, he has never been named MIAA Wrestler of the week – until now.

No. 1 Central Oklahoma hosted No. 14 Central Missouri Sunday afternoon and dominated the Mules, 37-7. The win secured UCO its sixth consecutive MIAA Championship.

When Johnson took the mat at 157 pounds, UCO already had a 12-3 lead, but his win kicked the rout into overdrive. Johnson had four takedowns and a near-fall plus the riding time point to earn a controlling 18-3 technical fall (7:00).

Johnson is ranked No. 1 at 157 pounds in the country. He leads the Bronchos into the postseason beginning with the NCAA Super Region IV Championships Sunday, March 1 in Edmond. UCO is looking to match the six-straight conference titles with a sixth consecutive regional title. The top three individuals at each weight advance to the NCAA Division II Men's Wrestling National Championships March 13-14 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
