Bronchos Drop Slugfest At OBU

Central Oklahoma Loses 12-10 In Shawnee, Returns Home For Drury Series

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Central Oklahoma rallied three times from being down four or more runs but couldn't quite get past Oklahoma Baptist in a non-conference game Tuesday at Bobby Cox Field.

Oklahoma Baptist 12, Central Oklahoma 10.

The two programs met two weeks ago in Edmond and the game was closer, an 8-7 win for the Bronchos. But UCO's offense was tasked with too much on Tuesday in Shawnee.

"We can't ask our offense to do that much," UCO head baseball coach Robbie Rea said. "They kept us in the game but we couldn't get the stops we needed in the field. We didn't pitch well today and that was too much to overcome."

UCO trailed 5-0 in the fourth inning but came back to make it 5-4 in the fifth. Then it was 8-4, but the Bronchos came back to make it 8-7. Then it was 11-7 and once again UCO came back to get within a run, 11-10, but couldn't finish the comeback.

Central Oklahoma used seven pitchers to cover eight innings of work. Chase Yarger got the start and the loss in two innings. He gave up two runs on four hits.

Jackson MacWilliams, John Demcher, Cade Perkins, Zack Hudsepth, Michael Lopez, and Cortt Gentry all threw one inning each. Only Lopez didn't give up a run. Hudsepth did record three strikeouts and Perkins fanned two Bison. Yarger, Lopez and Gentry had one K each.

Noah Smallwood led the offensive effort. He went 3-for-5 with a double and had three RBIs and two runs scored. Colton Ayres was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Drake Lee and Trevor Rowe also had one hit each and Lee, the MIAA Hitter of the Week, had a double.

Tuesday marked the first road game of the year for Central Oklahoma. The Bronchos are home again this weekend to host No. 17 Drury for a three-game non-conference series. The teams will play Friday at 3 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at noon.
