UCO Wins Series With Saturday Win

Central Oklahoma Beat Colorado Christian 8-7 Saturday To Take 3-0 Series Lead

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma clinched a series win over Colorado Christian with an 8-7 win in Game 3 Saturday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO, which swept CCU last February, improved to 6-2 on the season with the win. The fourth and final game of the non-conference series is scheduled for Sunday at noon.

"We just had to keep fighting them off today and I'm proud of the guys for finding a way to get it done," UCO head baseball coach Robbie Rea said. "They really jumped on us toward the end but thankfully we had an answer."

UCO cruised through five innings of play and had a 2-0 lead on a pair of solo home runs by Colton Ayres and Drake Lee. But then a back-and-forth battle ensued.

Colorado Christian scored three in the sixth to go in front. UCO answered with three in the bottom half to retake the lead. Then CCU scored four in the seventh to take a second lead. And the Bronchos responded again with three in the bottom half to go up 8-7.

Caleb Castle's two-run double in the seventh proved to be the game winner. He scored Jackson Archambeau and Carson Taylor on the play. Taylor had just hit an RBI single to score Cade Mills to make it 7-6. Castle's shot to center made it the final, 8-7.

Ayres gave UCO a 1-0 lead in the third with his first home run of the season. Lee made it 2-0 in the fourth with his second home run in as many days.

Taylor had his first RBI of the game in the sixth, scoring Trevor Row on a bases-loaded single to right field that tied the game, 3-3. Wyatt Yetter gave the Bronchos a 4-3 lead with a sacrifice fly on the next play. Ayres earned his second RBI of the game with a sac-fly to score Archambeau and give the Bronchos a 5-3 lead.

Logan Taylor got his first start of the season and had a great four innings of work. He struck out three batters and allowed four hits but no runs.

CCU rallied on the Broncho bullpen. Zack Hudspeth gave up two runs in one inning of work. Blake DeLong have up one and didn't record an out. Cortt Gentry struck out one batter in one inning. Then Connor Chambers gave up four runs – two earned – and didn't record an out. Tristan Wittau also threw 1/3 of an inning.

Cade Perkins ended up getting the win after one inning of work. He gave up two hits and a walk but not runs. And he was in the lineup when the Bronchos took the lead for good.

Mylan Childers continued his dominant ways with two strikeouts to get UCO out of the eighth inning. Brody Berlowitz earned his second save of the season (both this weekend) with a four-up, three-down ninth. He gave up a hit but struck out a batter and got a pair of flyouts.

Central Oklahoma wraps up the CCU series on Sunday and will make its first road trip of the year Tuesday when the Bronchos visit Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee.
