UCO Opens Colorado Christian Series With Two Wins Friday Afternoon

Bronchos Win 1-0, 7-4 In First of Four With CCU

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma opened its series against Colorado Christian with a pair of wins Friday at Wendell Simmons Field, taking a 1-0 win in Game 1 before a 7-4 victory in Game 2.

The teams are scheduled to play four games this weekend. Saturday's contest is set for 3 p.m. although weather has already altered the schedule and may again. An announcement on Game 3 will be made Saturday morning. The teams are set to wrap up the series Sunday at noon.

The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday but played under a beautiful sunny sky Friday afternoon. And the starting pitchers appreciated the weather.

Braxton Jones struck out 10 batters in six innings of work, allowing just three hits and a walk. The junior right-hander has 19 Ks in two starts (1-0) for the Bronchos this season. Jones did hit two batters but he forced Colorado Christian to leave six runners on base in the shutout.

Brody Berlowitz came out of the bullpen and struck out two more batters in the seventh to close out the game and earn his first save of the year.

UCO had seven hits in the game and an RBI fielder's choice scored the lone run. In the bottom of the fourth, Jackson Archambeau reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. He scooted to third on a single to left by Carson Taylor, then scored when Cade Mills reached on a fielder's choice. It was nearly an inning-ending double play but after CCU got Taylor out at second, the throw to first wasn't enough to get the third out as Archambeau crossed the plate to make it 1-0.

UCO had three hits and three runners left on base before the fourth and one hit and two left on after.

In the second game, the offense figured some things out. Kade Sheldon scored on a delayed double steal with two outs in the bottom of the first. He walked, advanced to second on a groundout and third on a wild pitch. After Colton Ayres walked, he was caught stealing while Sheldon trotted home to make it 1-0.

Mills led off the fourth with a single and moved to third on a Taylor single to right center. He scored on a wild pitch and the Bronchos led 2-0.

The first game Saturday lasted 1:40, and the first four innings of Game 2 were moving at the same pace. Then Colorado Christian burst into action and scored four runs on three hits and an error to take the lead.

But UCO had an answer.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ayres scored Sheldon on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to make it 4-3. Luke Stout scored on a bases-loaded balk to tie the game. Then Drake Lee smashed a three-run home run to right center to give the Bronchos the 7-4 lead.

Danny Satterlee got the start in Game 2 and threw 4 1/3, allowing one run on five hits. He struck out two batters. He was pulled after giving up a one-out double in the fifth. Michael Lopez came out of the bullpen first but he was pulled without recording an out. He gave up three runs on one hit and two walks.

Chase Yarger got UCO out of the fifth and earned a win in 2/3 of an inning of work. He did allow a hit but got an inning-ending double play.

Mylan Childers was credited with the save for throwing two innings, striking out five in the dominant relief performance. In three appearances this season, Childers has struck out 13 batters of the recorded 15 outs.

Lee's homer was the only extra-base hit in the second game Friday. Elijah Alexander had a double in the the first game.
