UCO Runs Over RiverHawks

No. 24-ranked Bronchos Sweep Northeastern State in Dominating Fashion

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Central Oklahoma throttled MIAA and intrastate rival Northeastern State to reach the 20-win plateau for the fifth straight season Thursday night at the NSU Event Center.

The No. 24-ranked Bronchos never trailed in sweeping past the RiverHawks 25-15, 25-15, 25-11, improving to 20-7 for the season. UCO, now 7-4 in league play, finishes the regular season Friday night at Arkansas-Fort Smith.

"We played pretty well," said head coach Edgar Miraku, who is now 349-106 in his 14th year at the UCO helm. "We got contributions from a lot of different players and did what we needed to do."

Myla Unterweger led a balanced offensive attack, hitting .364 with 11 kills in 22 attempts with three errors. Sawyer Franz added 10 kills for her fifth 10-plus kill outing in the last six matches.

Riley Roberts directed the offensive attack from her setter spot in dishing out 25 assists while also hitting a sizzling .583 with seven kills and no miscues in 12 attacks.

Taylor Fenton and Kate Wells had five kills apiece, with Wells adding two blocks. Georgia Ahlert chipped in three kills and four blocks, while Kaitlyn Parrott (eight digs), Morgan Manning (seven) and Jordyn Baker (seven) led the back row defense.

The only tie in the match came in the first set at 3-3 and UCO answered that with a 7-2 run to take control. Wells had two kills and joined Franz for a block in that spurt to make it 10-5 and the Bronchos coasted in from there.

An Unterweger kill and Ahlert solo block helped stake UCO to a quick 4-0 lead in the second set. Ahlert added another block and a kill as the cushion grew to 8-1 and the RiverHawks had no answer.

The third was close early before the Bronchos scored nine unanswered points to turn a 3-2 lead into an insurmountable 12-2 advantage. Franz slammed down three kills in that run and UCO cruised in to finish off its 11th sweep of the season.
