Bronchos Roll Over Arkansas-Fort Smith

Coach Edgar Miraku Earns 350th Career Win with Sweep

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Riley Roberts does a little bit of everything for Central Oklahoma and that trend continued Saturday night in a regular season-ending shellacking of Arkansas-Fort Smith.

The senior setter hit a phenomenal .833 with a career-high 10 kills and no errors in 12 attempts while also handing out 36 assists, serving up one ace and making a block in a 25-10, 25-15, 25-11 rout.

It was the third straight win for the No. 24-ranked Bronchos, who ended the regular season 21-7 overall and 8-4 in MIAA play to nail down the No. 5 seed for next week's conference tournament.

It was also the 350th career win for 14th-year head coach Edgar Miraku, who improved to 350-106 as the winningest coach in program history.

"I'm fortunate to have benefitted from a lot of great players and assistant coaches during my career," Miraku said. "We played at a really high level tonight and Riley did a great job leading the offense. It was a good way to finish and gives us some momentum for the postseason."

UCO had its second-best hitting match of the season, finishing with a .364 attack percentage behind 53 kills and just 10 errors in 118 attempts.

Sawyer Franz came up big once again. knocking down a match-high 13 kills for her sixth 10-kill outing in the last seven matches. Freshmen Kate Wells and Taylor Fenton collected nine kills apiece, with Wells hitting .692 and Fenton .643.

The Bronchos also got seven kills from Myla Unterweger, while Kaitlyn Parrott (19 digs), Jordyn Baker (12) and Emma Halstead (11) paced the back row defense. Morgan Manning added eight digs and three aces.

UCO never trailed in the opening set and was up 7-4 before breaking it open with eight unanswered points. Fenton had three kills and Wells two while the rookie pair also teamed up for a block as the lead grew to 15-4 and the Bronchos coasted in.

Franz had three kills in a 5-0 run that put Central on top 9-2 in the second set, with Fenton adding four kills and Roberts three the rest of the way in another lopsided win.

The Lions led for the first time of the match early in the third set, but the Bronchos soon took charge. Georgia Ahlert served up an ace and followed with a slam at the net to break a 3-3 tie and ignite a 7-2 run that gave UCO a 10-5 lead.

It was still close at 11-7 before the Bronchos reeled off seven straight points to break it open on the way to closing out their 12th sweep of the season.

UCO goes to St. Joseph, Missouri next week for the MIAA Volleyball Championships. The Bronchos will face an opponent to be determined in Thursday's first round.
