EDMOND – Estela Castillo fired an even-par 71 to lead Central Oklahoma on the final day of the Grace Shin Invitational as the Bronchos finished fourth in the 21-team event at the Golf Club of Edmond.
UCO shot a final-round 296 to finish the two-day, 36-hole event with a 591 total. Southeastern Oklahoma beat Henderson State in a playoff to win the team title after both tied at 582, followed by Arkansas-Fort Smith (590), UCO and Northwest Missouri (600).
Castillo's even-par round led the Bronchos while Layne Ailshie was right behind with a 72. UCO also got a 76 from Scarlet Sturch, a 77 from Ivanna Gerez and a 78 from Reagan Plank. MaKaylee Cowan (78), Josey Cavitt (78) and Faith Principato (83) participated as individuals for the Bronchos.
"It was a pretty good tournament for us," head coach Michael Bond said. "We made some mistakes, but overall I thought we played solid both days and continue to make progress."
Alshie had the best individual finish, tying for fifth with a one-over 143 total. Castillo's closing effort moved her up to 11th in the individual standings at 145.
Castillo started the final day on No. 2 and promptly birdied the par-5. She gave that back with a bogey on No. 3, then double bogeyed No. 8 and bogeyed No. 9 to drop to three over after eight holes.
The senior rebounded strong to start the back nine, birdieing the par-3 10th and par-4 11th to get back to one over. Castillo then reeled off seven straight pars before finishing her day with a birdie on the par-4 first to get back to even par.
Ailshie opened on No. 1 and parred her first four holes before making birdie on the par-4 fifth. The junior bogeyed No. 8 and 9 to finish with a one-over front-nine 38, gave another stroke back at No. 13 and then birdied the par-4 16th to come back with an even-par 34 in shooting her 72.
UCO continues its fall season next week, traveling to Kearney, Nebraska for the three-day Regional Preview.
