Bronchos Fall to No. 12 Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma couldn't keep up with No. 12-ranked Emporia State after a tough first-set loss in dropping its second straight MIAA decision Wednesday night at White Auditorium.

The No 23 Bronchos fell 28-26 in a back-and-forth opening set before the Hornets claimed 25-13, 25-15 victories in the final two sets. UCO fell to 18-7 for the season and 5-4 in conference play, while Emporia improved to 22-3 and 7-2 with its seventh straight win.

"We didn't play well enough against a great Emporia team," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "I thought we fought hard, but it wasn't good enough."

The Bronchos committed 24 attack errors in finishing with a season-low .061 hitting percentage.

Sawyer Franz paced UCO, finishing with 12 kills. Myla Unterweger added seven kills and Kate Wells had five kills with four total blocks. Riley Roberts had 23 assists, eight digs and three kills, with Kaitlyn Parrott (11 digs) and Jordyn Baker (10) leading the back row defensive efforts.

The Hornets jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set and took a series of five-point leads, the final one at 13-8. UCO responded with an 8-1 run to surge in front 16-14 behind two Franz kills.

ESU came back to take a 20-18 lead and it was a tight battle the rest of the way. Kills by Franz and Unterweger helped the Bronchos take a 23-22 lead, but the Hornets scored the next two points to go up 24-23.

UCO tied it at 24 on a Roberts kill, again at 25 on Unterweger's shot and once more at 26 on a Sawyer smash. But the Hornets scored the final two points on a kill and block to pull out the hard-fought win.

Emporia then bolted to big leads in each of the next two sets and the Bronchos weren't able to respond.

UCO continues its regular season-ending four-match road swing Friday at Pittsburg State before finishing next week with back-to-back matches at Northeastern State and Arkansas-Fort Smith.
