UCO Claims Road Win Over Gorillas

No. 23-ranked Bronchos Ended Two-game Losing Streak with Four-set Victory

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Myla Unterweger and Jordyn Baker fueled a match-opening eruption that put Central Oklahoma in quick control and the No. 23-ranked Bronchos went on to a key MIAA win over Pittsburg State Friday night.

Unterweger had five kills and Baker four service aces as UCO bolted to a 13-0 lead in the first set on its way to a 25-8, 25-10, 15-25, 25-22 victory that ended a two-match league losing streak. The Bronchos improved to 19-7 overall and 6-4 in conference play with the win.

"We got off to great starts in the first two sets and that was key for us tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "It was a big win for us after two tough losses. Now we need to finish strong to get ready for the postseason."

UCO ends the regular season next week with back-to-back road matches against league foes Northeastern State and Arkansas-Fort Smith before going to St. Joseph, Missouri Nov. 12-14 for the eight-team MIAA Volleyball Championships.

Unterweger finished the night with 19 kills and a .311 attack percentage. Sawyer Franz had another stellar performance, hitting .357 with 13 kills in 28 attacks with three errors.

The Bronchos also got six kills apiece from Georgia Ahlert, Taylor Fenton and Riley Roberts. Roberts added 43 assists in directing the offensive attack to go with 16 digs.

Kaitlyn Parrott paced the back row defense once again with 20 digs while also serving up four aces and Baker finished with a career-high six aces.

Four of Baker's aces came in the opening salvo of the first set as UCO jumped out to a commanding 13-0 lead. Unterweger knocked down five kills in that stretch and the Gorillas had no answer as the Bronchos cruised to the 17-point rout.

It was more of the same in the second set. Unterweger continued her hot start, ripping off four kills in helping Central grab a 6-1 advantage. It was 13-4 following back-to-back Franz kills and the Bronchos coasted in from there.

Pitt State grabbed a quick 5-0 lead in the third set to earn an easy win and keep the match going, then went up 5-0 again to start the fourth.

UCO responded with a 10-4 run, going ahead 10-9 on a Fenton kill to set up a back-and-forth finish. The Gorillas led 19-17 when Wells teamed up with Franz and then Fenton for consecutive blocks during a 5-0 spurt that put the Bronchos ahead 22-19.

Three straight PSU points made it 23-22 before a Gorilla error and Parrott ace ended the set to give the Bronchos the much-needed win.
