No. 23 Bronchos Fall to No. 6 Nebraska-Kearney

UCO Has Eight-match Winning Streak Ended in Home Finale

EDMOND – No. 6-ranked Nebraska-Kearney was too much for No. 23 Central Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House, handing the Bronchos a four-set loss in the final home match of the season.

UCO had its eight-match winning streak stopped with a 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 25-13 setback, falling to 18-6 overall and 5-3 in the MIAA. The league-leading Lopers improved to 23-2 and 10-0.

"We battled hard, but Kearney has a great team and they were better than us today," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We made too many mistakes and didn't play as well as we needed to."

Central made 22 attack errors in hitting just .114 and also committed 10 service errors in the match.

Georgia Ahlert led the Bronchos once again, finishing with 12 kills and five assisted blocks. Sawyer Franz and Myla Unterweger added nine kills apiece.

Kate Wells was a force at the net with seven total blocks to go with five kills, while Brylee Moore had five kills and four assisted blocks. Riley Roberts handed out 34 assists along with making 11 digs and two kills.

Kaitlyn Parrott paced the back row defensive efforts with 21 digs, while Emma Halstead had 14.

The first set was close early and UCO was within 11-9 after an Ahlert kill, but the Lopers took control after that on their way to the 10-point win.

The Bronchos never trailed in the second set to even the match.

It was 5-2 after Ahlert and Roberts teamed up for a block and Ahlert had two straight service aces in making it 8-4. The lead was six (12-6) after Moore and Wells combined for a block, again at 20-14 following a Franz kill and a final time at 24-18 after a Moore kill.

UNK reeled off four straight points to get within 24-22 and force a UCO timeout and the Bronchos came out of that break to end the set on an Unterweger kill.

The third set went back-and-forth much of the way, with UCO taking a 19-18 advantage on Ahlert's kill. But the Lopers came back with a 4-0 to go up 22-19 and the Bronchos couldn't answer back.

UNK then took control early in the fourth set on its way to ending the match.

Central starts a season-ending four-match road trip Wednesday at No. 13 Emporia State.
