UCO Dominates At Jet Open

Bronchos Had 12 Top-four Finishers With Five Champions in the One-day Tournament

WICHITA, Kansas – Central Oklahoma had at least one finalist in eight of the 10 weights and finished with five champions to overwhelm the field at the Jet Open Sunday. 
 
The Bronchos sent 15 backups to the all-day tournament hosted by Newman and 12 placed in the top four, with 133 Easton Taylor, 141 Adam Maki, 157 Hayze Ivey, 165 Cooper Zickefoose and 174 Tucker Waitman all claiming titles. 
 
UCO also got runner-up finishes from 141 Canon Acklin, 149 Kasen Miller, 197 Jackson Blackburn and Hvy Paul Sharp, while 184 Seth Sarasua and 197 Emmanuel Skillings took third and 157 Grant Gober fourth. The Bronchos went 49-14 on the day with an incredible 38 bonus-point wins (17 falls, 13 technical falls and eight major decisions). 
 
Taylor followed an opening-round bye with two decisions, including a tight 2-1 win, then scored a first-period fall in the semifinals before rolling to a 10-1 finals rout. 
 
Maki cruised into the finals with two technical falls and a major decision before clipping teammate Acklin 2-1. Acklin also had no trouble making the finals with a fall, technical fall and major decision. 
 
Ivey started the tournament with a 16-0 technical fall and then earned three straight decisions to take the gold medal, capped by a tough 4-2 finals victory. Zickefoose enjoyed a dominating day with two technical falls and two pins, needing just 56 seconds to end his finals bout. 
 
Waitman also went 4-0, posting a 44-second fall, 15-0 technical fall and 11-3 finals romp along with a 12-8 semifinal win. 
 
Miller had four straight bonus wins in making the finals before dropping a tight 8-7 battle there. Blackburn fell 12-8 in the title match after opening with two falls and a 17-0 drubbing, while Sharp scored three straight falls before losing a 4-2 finals decision. 
 
Skillings had four technical falls in his third-place showing as he made his season debut and Sarasua went 4-1 with three bonus wins in taking the bronze medal. Gober went 3-2 in the tournament. 
 
UCO's varsity returns from the holiday break this weekend at the NWCA Division II National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The top-ranked Bronchos received the No. 1 seed in the 16-team tournament and open against unseeded but No. 9-ranked Ashland Friday at 2 p.m. inside the UNI-Dome on the Northern Iowa campus.
