Franz, Perdue Lead UCO Past UT-Tyler

Bronchos Sweep Patriots In Battle of Returning National Tournament Teams

TYLER, Texas – Dominating performances by Sawyer Franz and Mikiah Perdue carried Central Oklahoma to a sweep of host UT-Tyler Friday evening in second-day action at the season-opening Patriot Classic.

Franz collected 14 kills and Perdue added 13 – both career highs – as the No. 7-ranked Bronchos overwhelmed the Patriots 25-18, 25-20, 25-17 for their second win in two tries. UCO finishes the three-day event Saturday with a 9 a.m. showdown against No. 5 Ferris State and a 3 p.m. match against Ouachita Baptist.

"We played pretty well and beat a really good team," said head coach Edgar Miraku of downing a UT-Tyler team that made last year's national tournament. "Sawyer and Mikiah both had incredible nights and really carried us. It was a great win for us, but we can't let up now and will have to play even better tomorrow."

Franz hit .406 with 14 kills and just one error in 32 attempts, with the junior outside hitter adding six digs. Perdue had 13 kills in just 21 tries with two miscues in hitting .524 and the senior middle blocker also had three solo blocks.

The Bronchos also got 10 kills from Kedron Burk and seven from Kamryn Glover as UCO played its second straight match without returning starters Sydney Huck and Lari Migliorino, who are both nursing minor injuries.

Lindsey Houran was once again masterful in leading the offensive attack, handing out 40 assist to go along with 10 digs, four kills and a solo block. It was the 50th 40-plus assist match in 100 career outings for Houran, who moved into fourth place on UCO's all-time assists list with 3,968.

Kaitlyn Parrott chipped in 14 digs and Morgan Manning 11 to pace Central's back-row defense.

The Bronchos never trailed in the opening set as Franz slammed down two quick kills for a 2-0 lead. It was a 10-4 advantage after a Burk dunk at the net, then the Patriots clawed back to within 12-8.

UCO ripped off six unanswered points to put the set away, getting a kill and block from Perdue in building an 18-8 cushion. Burk had three kills the rest of the way to finish off the 25-18 victory.

The second set was back-and-forth early before Burk and Franz delivered back-to-back kills to break a 7-7 tie and put the Bronchos on top to stay. The lead was 16-15 when consecutive kills by Burk, Franz and Houran gave UCO some breathing room at 19-15.

Burk and Perdue had two kills apiece down the stretch to finish off the 25-20 win. Franz finished with seven kills in the set.

Perdue dominated the start of the third set to put the Bronchos in early control, knocking down three kills and adding a solo block as UCO bolted to a 5-0 lead. The Patriots rallied to within 14-12 before Perdue had two more kills in a 6-0 run that made it 20-12 and ended any suspense.
