Bronchos Fall At Northwest

Central Oklahoma Drops First MIAA Game, Returns Home In Week 5

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Central Oklahoma let a close game get away with three big minutes on either side of halftime and ultimately lost 38-16 at Northwest Missouri Saturday afternoon in the MIAA.

UCO is 2-2 on the season following the loss and now 2-1 in league play. Northwest improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the MIAA.

"We didn't play very well in a lot of areas and we hurt ourselves with penalties and mistakes," UCO head football coach Adam Dorrel said. "You can't afford to do that in big games or on the road and we didn't give ourselves a chance by doing that. We need to take some of the good that happened and refocus and get ready for the next one."

Central Oklahoma hosts Central Missouri next Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in Edmond.

UCO and Northwest were in a defensive slugfest for 29 minutes Saturday, tied 7-7. But an ill-timed penalty on a punt return gave Northwest 1st & 10 at the UCO 25 with 48 seconds remaining in the first half and the Bearcats threw a touchdown pass on the next play. Coming out of halftime, host Northwest went 75 yards on eight plays in just over two minutes to take a 21-7 lead. The game flipped in a hurry and the Bronchos never recovered.

Central put up 294 yards of total offense on Saturday, with Clayton Creasey throwing for 174 in his second career start. William Mason rushed for 62 and Dev Matthews rushed for 61 to help the Bronchos to 120 total rushing yards in the game.

Matthews had a 13-yard touchdown, the first of his career, in the first quarter that tied the game, 7-7. Mason has an 11-yard rush in the fourth quarter that made it 36-16.

Joseph Kim added a 32-yard field goal in the third quarter that made it 21-10.

Connor Johnson led the defensive efforts with seven tackles, including one for a loss. Willie Rice added four stops. Lemuel Gordon had four tackles and the one sack for the Bronchos in the game. UCO did have three quarterback hurries and three pass breakups.

UCO hosts Central Missouri next Saturday night. The Mules are 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA.
