UCO Cruises Past Newman In MIAA Opener

No. 2-ranked Bronchos Improve to 15-0 With Road Sweep of Jets

WICHITA, Kan.  No. 2-ranked Central Oklahoma breezed past Newman in its Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association opener Friday night.
 
The unbeaten Bronchos improved to 15-0 on the season with a 25-13, 25-11, 25-19 drubbing of the Jets for their 13th sweep of the season. UCO moves on to Pittsburg, Kansas Saturday for a 2 p.m. meeting against Pittsburg State.
 
"We played pretty well tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "It was a good start to our conference schedule, but we have to stay focused and come out tomorrow ready to go."
 
The Bronchos hit .337 as a team, making just 11 errors with 46 kills in 104 attacks.
 
Senior standout Sydney Huck led UCO's balanced attack, hitting .476 with 11 kills in 21 attempts with one miscue. Mikiah Perdue had a dominating outing at the net, also hitting .476 with eight kills and no errors in 12 attempts while also blocking five shots.
 
Kedron Burk chipped in seven kills, Riley Roberts added six and Kamryn Glover knocked down five kills along with serving up five service aces and making 12 digs.
 
Lindsey Houran once again directed the offensive attack, dishing out 38 assists. Kaitlyn Parrott led the back row defense with 13 digs.
 
The Bronchos jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first set on a Huck kill and Glover ace, but Newman came back to tie it at 3-3. The lead was 8-6 when UCO took control with a 10-1 run behind three Glover aces along with two kills and a solo block by Perdue.
 
The Jets could get no closer and Morgan Manning's ace closed out the 25-13 romp.
 
It was more of the same in the second set as the Bronchos took a quick 3-0 lead on a Huck kill, Glover ace and Newman error. The Jets scored to make it 3-1, then Huck had two kills a 4-0 spurt that pushed the margin to 7-1.
 
UCO cruised in from there, with three straight Perdue kills down the stretch helping close out the 25-11 rout.
 
The Bronchos never trailed again in the final set, though it was tied 4-4 early. A Burk slam at the net and solo block sparked a 4-0 spurt that made it 8-4.
 
Newman scored to make it 8-5, then Huck, Burk and Glover smashed down kills during a 6-1 surge that pushed the lead to 14-6 and UCO went on to close out the match.
