Bronchos Down SWOSU in MIAA/GAC Crossover Opener

Mikiah Perdue Knocked Down a Career-high 18 Kills in Four-set Win

EDMOND – Mikiah Perdue collected a career-high 18 kills to lead No. 2-ranked Central Oklahoma past upset-minded Southwestern Oklahoma Thursday in the opening match of the MIAA/GAC Crossover Challenge at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos turned back the Bulldogs 25-21, 21-25, 25-16, 25-23 to stay perfect on the season (11-0) and in the series against SWOSU (16-0). UCO returns at 7 p.m. to face East Central, then plays Northwestern Oklahoma at 5 p.m. Friday and Southern Nazarene at 2 p.m. Saturday.

"It wasn't pretty by any means," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We made a ton of mistakes and SWOSU gave us all we wanted. Mikiah had a great match for us and gave us a big spark."

Perdue hit .341 in the match with 18 kills and four errors in 41 attacks, with six of those kills coming in the deciding fourth set. The senior middle blocker added five blocks (two solo, three assisted) and a pair of digs.

Kamryn Glover chipped in nine kills, three service aces and two blocks, while Sydney Huck had eight kills. Kedron Burk added seven kills and a pair of rejections.

Lindsey Houran dished out 39 assists in directing the offense and also had 16 digs. Kaitlyn Parrott (21) digs and Riley Roberts (20) led the back row defensive efforts for UCO.

The Bronchos took charge quickly in the opening set as Parrott started with back-to-back aces and Glover followed a SWOSU error for a 4-0 lead. It was a 10-3 advantage after Burk's solo block and the lead was nine (20-11) after a Burk kill.

The Bulldogs rallied to make it close, going on a 10-3 run to get within 23-21, but UCO got consecutive kills from Myla Unterweger and Perdue to end it.

SWOSU was in control throughout the second set in tying the match as the Bronchos committed a series of service and attack errors.

UCO jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set, with Perdue slamming down two kills at the net, and it was 6-2 after Perdue and Glover teamed up for a block. The Bulldogs scored three straight to make it 6-5, then Glover, Perdue and Huck had consecutive kills for a 9-5 lead.

The Bronchos steadily pulled away from there, getting three kills from Huck and two each from Perdue, Burk, Huck and Roberts in finishing off the win to take the lead in the match.

It was a back-and-forth battle in the fourth set before SWOSU surged in front 13-11, but Central responded with 10 unanswered points to take the lead for good.

Perdue had three kills, Huck two and Glover two aces in that spurt as the Bronchos went up 21-13, then the Bulldogs used a 9-2 run to get within 23-22. An attack error made it 24-22, then SWOSU scored to stay alive before Burk ended it with a shot at the net.
