Bronchos Fall In Finale With NSU

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma couldn't overcome an improbable first inning and dropped the series final with Northeastern State 10-3 Tuesday at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO (31-14, 21-12 MIAA) gave up 10 runs on six hits and an error in the top of the first inning and never recovered. Despite shutting down the guests to no runs on five hits through the final eight innings, the Bronchos were limited to six hits on the day.

The Bronchos rallied for a couple of runs in the fifth and one more in the seventh, but left 12 runners on base on the day. UCO had beaten NSU in Edmond last month and again in Tahlequah two weeks ago.

Central Oklahoma is off this weekend and wraps up the regular season next week. UCO is scheduled to play at Oklahoma Baptist next Tuesday before hosting Missouri Western for the final series of the season, May 1-3. The season finale, on Saturday, May 3, will celebrate Senior Day and Alumni Day to end the year.

Drake Lee and Aiden Proctor hit back-to-back one-out doubles in the fifth. Proctor scored Lee and then scored on Ty Chapman's single to make it 10-2. Ty Hammack drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to score Caden Robertson.

Orlando Gonzalez had two hits on Tuesday. Proctor, Chapman, Robertson, and Lee had the other four.

Caleb Burchfield got the start Tuesday and gave up seven runs, five earned, on four hits and two walks. He did not record an out. Trent Gerber rushed out of the bullpen and got two outs, giving up three runs on two hits and a walk. Austin Burda followed to get UCO out of the first.

Burda pitched 3.2 innings. Preston Giltner, Michael Lopez, Brady Gilmore, Denton Whiteside, John Demcher, and Tristan Wittau all made appearances out of the bullpen. NSU had just three hits and struck out eight times after the first inning.
