UCO Wins It With A Walkoff

Central Oklahoma Beat Pittsburg State 5-4 Friday In Game 1 Of Three-Game Series

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma ran its win streak to five with an MIAA series opening win over Pittsburg State Friday night at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO improved to 14-4 on the year with the win and the Bronchos are now 5-2 in the MIAA.

"Had to battle for that one," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "The guys did a great job of staying patient in the ninth and when the opportunity came, we took advantage of it. We're going to have to fight just as hard for the next two."

Central Oklahoma trailed 4-2 heading to the bottom of the ninth inning. Ty Chapman was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning before Orlando Gonzalez struck out for the first out of the inning. Joe Richhio doubles to left after that, putting two runners in scoring position for the Bronchos. Aidan Proctor pinch-ran for Ricchio.

After a pitching change by Pitt State, Garrett Long drew a walk and loaded the bases for Grant Randall. He also drew a walk, with Chapman scoring on the play to make it 4-3. Then Carson Carpenter came up. He hit a ball up the middle, a soft line drive to second, but the fielder dropped the ball. That allowed one run to score, but a throwing error home allowed a second run to score.

Proctor's run tied the game and Long's run won the game for the Bronchos.

UCO trailed 4-0 in the game Friday. Pitt got one in the first, and three in the fourth. The Bronchos responded with two in the fourth. Caden Robertson hit a solo homer to right center to get the Bronchos on the board. Then Ricchio's single to shortstop scored Drake Lee to make it 4-2.

Carpenter, Lee, and Ricchio each had two hits in the game. UCO finished with nine.

Brett Pense got the start for the Bronchos on Friday. He threw 5.0 innings, allowed four runs on six hits and two walks, and struck out one batter. Chase Yarger threw one inning and got a 1-2-3 sixth. Preston Giltner, who would earn the win, threw three innings and struck out three batters.

Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State are scheduled to play Saturday afternoon, but a decision will be made Saturday morning pending weather. The Bronchos are scheduled to wrap up the three-game series Sunday afternoon.
