UCO Takes Pitt Series With Sunday Split

Bronchos Win Finale To Earn 2-1 MIAA Series Victory

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma split a Sunday doubleheader with Pittsburg State, falling 9-5 in the first game before a 10-4 victory in the second game.

Central Oklahoma, which won 5-4 on Friday in Game 1 of the three-game MIAA series, is now 15-5 on the season following Sunday's results. The Bronchos are 6-3 in the MIAA. Pitt State is 13-5 overall and 4-5 in league play.

"It was good to see the guys respond after losing the first game," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We responded well. It's important to win the series and to win it against good teams like Pitt State is really important. It was a good weekend for us."

Central Oklahoma won 5-4 on Friday with a wild walkoff finish. Saturday's game was postponed due to rain, so a doubleheader was left to be completed on Sunday.

Pittsburg State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Bronchos scored two in the second and one in the third to tie the game. Pitt then got one in the fifth and two in the sixth to go back in front, 6-3.

After UCO scored two in the bottom of the eighth to get it to one run, Pittsburg State added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth to get the 9-5 win.

Danny Satterlee started Sunday's first game and took the loss. He threw four innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks. Satterlee did strike out four batters.

Denton Whiteside struck out the side in the fifth inning, Brayden Thompson threw 1 2/3 and struck out two batters, and John Demcher threw 1 1/2 and struck out two batters. Tristan Wittau threw 1/3 of an inning, giving up three runs on one hit and two walks. Brett McComas threw the final 2/3 for the Bronchos.

UCO struck out 12 batters in the game, but the Bronchos struck out themselves 14 times on the day. UCO had six hits in the game. Orlando Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and Caden Robertson also hit a homer. Grant Randall, Ty Hammack, and Joe Ricchio all had base hits.

Sunday's second game and the rubber match of the series was another back and forth affair and close battle until the last two innings, similar to the first game earlier in the day.

UCO had a 1-0 lead in the second inning, Pitt State led 3-1 in the fourth but the Bronchos got one back to make it 3-2 going to the fifth. UCO then got three in the bottom of the fifth to take control.

Pitt scored another in the sixth to make it 5-4, but UCO added one in the seventh and four in the eighth to pull away. Pitt's run in the ninth made it the final, 10-5.

Brady Gilmore got the start in the finale and although he did not get the win, was efficient in four innings of work. Gilmore gave up three runs on four hits and two walks and he recorded three strikeouts.

Chase Yarger threw three innings, struck out two batters, and gave up just one run on one hit. He got the win and is now 3-0 on the season.

Valek Cisneros came on to close out the game in the eighth inning. He gave up one run on two hits, and hit a batter, but he also recorded five strikeouts to pick up his fifth save of the season.

It was not only the fifth save of the year for Cisneros, but the 24th save of his career with the Bronchos. He is now tied with Josh Rutland (2018-19) for the most saves in school history and is one shy of tying the MIAA record for career saves, held by Central Missouri's Chris Matlock (2008-08) and Pittsburg State's Ryan McKay (2013-16).

Robertson continued his big day at the plate Sunday. He went 3-for-5 with a home run and a triple in the game. He had two RBIs and scored two runs. Hammack went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, and Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored.

Randall, Carson Carpenter, and Garrett Long also had base hits in the finale win for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma is back on the diamond Tuesday afternoon, hosting Arkansas Tech in a single non-conference game at 3 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field. The Bronchos will then travel to Hays, Kansas to take on Fort Hays State for a three-game MIAA series beginning Friday.
