Central Rallies Past Missouri Southern

Bronchos Score Nine Runs In Eighth Inning To Take Series With Southern

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma scored nine runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull ahead of Missouri Southern and Valek Cisneros set an MIAA record by closing out the win for the Bronchos, 14-12, in Game 2 of the three-game series at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO improved to 19-8 on the season with the win, and 9-6 in league play. MSSU is 16-10 overall and 9-7 in the MIAA.

Cisneros recorded his 26th career save, more than any player in league history (saves became an official stat in 1969). The senior right-handed closer set the UCO record last week with his 25th save, which tied for most in MIAA history. The Clinton, Oklahoma native now stands alone at the top of the list.

"We never quit fighting," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We kept chipping away at it, but they kept adding to it. The rally in the eighth was wild and I'm proud of the guys for pulling through. And really happy for Val to get the MIAA record. A school record is awesome and a conference record is even better."

Martin, as well as MSSU head coach Bryce Darnell, were both ejected in the eighth inning. Martin first, arguing a check swing called strike. Then as the rally continued, Darnell was tossed for arguing a play at the plate.

UCO trailed 7-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth and found a four-run rally to get within two, but the Bronchos were down 11-5 heading to the bottom of the eighth.

Orlando Gonzalez led off with a walk, then Joe Ricchio had single up the middle, and Drake Lee walked to load the bases. UCO got its first run when Davan Brady was hit by a pitch, then Garrett Long hit a ground-rule double down the right field line to score two. UCO cut the six-run lead in half.

After a pitching change, and the first out of the inning, Ty Chapman hit a double to left center that scored two more and made it a one-run game. Another pitching change, and an intentional walk to Caden Robertson, Ty Hammack drew a walk. UCO had the bases loaded again, down by one, with one out in the inning, and had sent all nine batters to the plate.

Gonzalez came up for a second time and delivered a three-RBI single through the left side to put the Bronchos in front, 13-11.

Cisneros came on to pitch the ninth and gave up a leadoff double. A groundout moved the runner the third and another groundout scored the final run to make it 14-12. Cisneros then struck out the final batter to close out the win and get the saves record.

Gonzalez led the Bronchos at the plate, going 3-for-4 with six RBIs, four runs scored, and the two-run home run. Chapman also had three hits in the game, going 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBIs.

Robertson went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Lee went 2-for-4 with a double and one run scored. Ricchio, Dylan Darnall, and Long, all had one hit.

Danny Satterlee got the start for the Bronchos on Saturday. He allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out four batters. Brady Gilmore threw one inning, Michael Lopez threw two, and Preston Giltner threw one inning. Dillon Dibrell faced two batters in the eighth, Austin Burda and Brayden Thompson combined to get UCO through that inning before handing the ball to Cisneros.

Central Oklahoma and Missouri Southern will meet once more, Sunday at 12 p.m., to wrap up the three-game series. UCO is in the midst of an eight-game homestand and will host Northeastern State for a midweek MIAA matchup Wednesday in Edmond.
