UCO Takes Game 2, Series At Emporia

Bronchos Win 7-2 Sunday, Look To Sweep MIAA Series Monday Afternoon

EMPORIA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma had one big inning and it was more than enough behind another great performance by the pitching staff as the Bronchos beat Emporia State 7-2 Sunday in Game 2 of the three-game MIAA series.

UCO is 12-4 on the year following the win, and 3-2 in the MIAA. Emporia is 5-7 overall and 1-4 in league play.

"Pitching was really good for us again, defense was too," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "The guys did a good job finding a way to get it done at the plate and it's good to win our first series after dropping last weekend. Now we want to go get one more on Monday and finish the job."

Danny Satterlee got the start and was solid through five innings of work. He gave up three hits, one solo home run, and walked three batters, but also struck out three more. He left the game with UCO down 1-0 after five innings.

Preston Giltner came on in relief and got two flyouts and a groundout in a 1-2-3 sixth inning and then UCO made a big rally in the seventh.

Emporia's starter kept the Bronchos scoreless through six innings and had only allowed two hits and a walk while striking out six UCO batters. But the Hornets went to the bullpen in the seventh, and Central made a move.

And it all happened with two outs.

Drake Lee struck out and Ty Chapman grounded out, then Orlando Gonzalez got it going with a double to left center. He also stole third base before Matt Baughn drew a walk. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch after that and the game was tied, 1-1.

Garrett Long walked after that and Grant Randall scored Baughn with an RBI single to right. Carson Carpenter then drew a walk and ESU went back to its bullpen.

With Long, Randall, and Carpenter on base, Caden Robertson got the first look at the second reliever and he drove a 2-2 pitch out to left for a grand slam. UCO 6, Emporia 1.

Robertson scored Carpenter with an RBI double in the top of the ninth to make it 7-1. Emporia got one back in the ninth to make it the final, 7-2.

Tristan Wittau pitched the seventh and the eighth and recorded one strikeout facing seven batters. Dillon Dibrell came on to start the bottom of the ninth, but walked the leadoff and Austin Burda followed him. Burda gave up a single and a walk.

Game 3 is scheduled for Monday at 1 p.m. The Bronchos will return home for another MIAA series beginning Friday at Wendell Simmons Field against Pittsburg State.
