UCO Defense Flirts With Record In Win Over 'Cats

Central Oklahoma Beat Northwest Missouri 82-55 Thursday Night In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma used a near record-setting defensive performance to get back in the win column with an 82-55 blowout of Northwest Missouri Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.
 
UCO improved to 13-9 on the season with the win and 7-6 in the MIAA.
 
"The guys came out playing really well on defense and set the tone for the game," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We're proud of them for effort on that end of the floor because that set it up for us to play well on the other end."
 
Central Oklahoma recorded 23 steals on Thursday night – one shy of the school record. Senior guard Jordan Thompson recorded nine steals on Thursday night – one shy of the school record. Israel Hart, Luke Haasl, and Jacobi Sebock all had four steals too. Matthew Willenborg and Preston Aymond chipped in one steal each.
 
UCO recorded 24 steals against Mid-America Christian (MACU) in 2001. Curtis Haywood II recorded 10 steals in Central's NCAA tournament game in 2023.
 
Thursday in Edmond, defense was the name of the game.
 
The Bronchos forced seven turnovers in the first five minutes, had nine turnovers forced through 10 minutes, and 14 turnovers in 15 minutes. By the end of the first half, it was 15 turnovers and UCO had 14 steals as a result.
 
Central held Northwest to 11-for-28 shooting in the opening half and built a 43-29 lead at halftime.
 
While the pace didn't continue for all 40 minutes, Central finished the game forcing 26 turnovers.
 
Thompson led the Bronchos on offense too, pouring in a game-high 16 points. He was 7-for-10 from the floor after an 0-for-10 day in UCO's loss at Emporia on Sunday. Thompson hit one 3-pointer and one free-throw Thursday to go with a career-high nine steals, three assists and two rebounds.

JV Seat joined Thompson with a game-high 16 points. Seat was 5-for-11 from the floor, 3-for-5 from behind the 3-point line, and 3-for-3 at the free-throw line. He had four assists and three rebounds as well.
 
Haasl and Sebock both scored 12 points. Both made four shots. Both made four free-throws. Sebock had a game-high 11 rebounds to post a double-double. Haasl pulled down seven rebounds.
 
Parker Hannah scored 10 points off the bench, giving UCO a fifth in double figures. The sophomore guard was 3-for-6 from the floor, 2-for-2 from behind the 3-point line, and 2-for-2 at the free-throw line. He also chipped in two rebounds.
 
Hart finished with nine points, Ben Averritt scored five, and Connor Newton added two points. All 14 Bronchos played on Thursday night.
 
Central Oklahoma returns to the floor Saturday afternoon to host Missouri Western and will play prior to the women's game with a 1:40 p.m. tipoff scheduled at Hamilton Field House. The game will be broadcast live on 38 The Spot in Kansas City and goes on air at 1:30 p.m.
