UCO Drops Battle With Fort Smith

Central Oklahoma Loses 74-70 To Arkansas Fort Smith In MIAA Matchup At Hamilton Field House

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma lost a late lead and lost and MIAA home game 74-70 Thursday night against Arkansas Fort Smith at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos are 15-12 overall following the loss and are now 9-9 in the MIAA. The Bronchos prior to the game were eighth in KPI Standings, which the league is using to determine the 10 teams that qualify for the MIAA Basketball Championship next week in Kansas City.

UCO plays Northeastern State Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the final game of the season.

"Fort Smith is a good team and they gave us trouble in some areas," UCO head men's coach Bob Hoffman said. "We played well and we had a chance to win it, but we didn't finish the job."

Thursday night's game featured seven lead changes and four ties with both teams' largest lead at just six points. The Bronchos led for more than 20 minutes in the game.

But UCO's last lead came with 4:17 to go when Israel Hart put the Bronchos up 64-62. Luke Haasl's dunk with 2:01 to play would be the last field goal of the game. It brought UCO to within two, 68-66.

JV Seat and Jacobi Sebock earned trips to the line and made four straight free-throws to tie the game, 70-70, with 56 seconds remaining.

Fort Smith used 20 seconds and made a layup to go up two, then the Bronchos used another 25 seconds to get Haasl on the free-throw line with eight seconds left. He missed both attempts, and Fort Smith two more free-throws and Parker Hannah missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer with the final, 74-70.

Central Oklahoma shot 39.3 percent Thursday night, making just 3 of 15 3-pointers – a 20 percent rate. The Bronchos were 23-for-32 at the free-throw line.

Hart and Sebock led Central Oklahoma with 17 points apiece. Seat scored 13 and Haasl 10. Matthew Willenborg (six), Jordan Thompson (five) and Hannah (two) also scored.

Hart went 5-for-17 and made 1 of 5 from deep. He made all six free-throw attempts and finished with five assists, two steals, one rebound and one block.

Sebock was 7-for-14, made 3 of 5 free-throws, and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. He also had two assists and two steals.

Seat made 3-pointers. Haasl had five rebounds and two blocked shots.

Central Oklahoma has one final game left in the 2024-25 season Saturday at home against longtime rival, Northeastern State. The Bronchos will honor three seniors prior to tipoff – Thompson, Haasl, and Preston Aymond.

The MIAA will announce Saturday night the results of the final KPI Standings and the official bracket for the 2025 MIAA Basketball Championship, which will be played March 5-9 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri.
