Broncho Upset Falls Short in San Antonio

Central Oklahoma Loses 66-63 To No. 16 St. Edward's In River City Holiday Classic

SAN ANTONIO – Central Oklahoma had a chance to upset No. 16 St. Edward's Wednesday afternoon in the second day of the River City Holiday Classic at Northside Sports Gym but a turnover with 11 seconds left was followed by an SEU 3-pointer with two seconds remaining and the Bronchos lost 66-63.

UCO is now 7-7 on the season following the loss. The Bronchos break for Christmas and will return for their final non-conference contest Dec. 30 against Dallas Christian in Edmond.

"We got ahead of ourselves on what should've been the last play and that was our chance," UCO head men's coach Bob Hoffman said. "We could've done things differently to not put ourselves in that spot, but that's the way it goes sometimes."

Central Oklahoma had a 10-point lead, 61-51, when Matthew Willenborg slammed home an alley-oop dunk with 5:39 to play. But the Bronchos went cold and SEU outscored UCO 16-2 down the stretch to win the game.

Willenborg led Central Oklahoma with 29 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Willenborg was 11-for-20 from the floor, including 4 of 8 from behind the 3-point line. He also went 3-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Parker Hannah also scored in double figures, putting up 14 points. Like Willenborg he was 4-for-8 from the behind the 3-point line. The two combined for eight of Central's nine 3-pointers in the game.

Jack Robinson put in six points, Marcus Zeigler Jr. scored five, Trey Tuck scored three, and Ben Averitt and Noah Eckels both scored two points.

Central Oklahoma was 24-for-60 from the floor overall, 9-for-24 from behind the arc, and 4-for-7 at the free-throw line.

UCO jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the game in the first two minutes. St. Edward's spent most of the first half working back into it and took a 35-34 lead into halftime.

The Bronchos opened the second half with a 7-0 run to go back in front. SEU got the lead back with 12:56 to go, 49-47. Then the Bronchos went on a quick 8-0 run to take a 55-49 lead.

Central controlled that lead up to 10 points, 61-51, with five minutes to play before the late cold spell doomed UCO.
