Bronchos Fall Short In San Antonio

Central Oklahoma Falls 72-62 To St. Mary's In River

SAN ANTONIO – Central Oklahoma couldn't keep pace with No. 7 St. Mary's Tuesday in the first of two games in the River City Holiday Classic at Northside Sports Gym and lost 72-62 in the non-conference contest.

UCO is 7-6 on the season following the loss. The Bronchos will play No. 16 St. Edward's on Wednesday in the second and final game of the 16-team festival co-hosted by Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State in San Antonio.

"We fought hard," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "To have a chance in the final minute to take down a Top 10 team dealing with everything we're dealing with is a testament to the fight and determination of our team. It didn't work out tonight but games like this have lessons that will help us in the future."

Central Oklahoma is already without two returning All-MIAA players and was without leading scorer Josh Nwankwo Tuesday due to injury. He is the fourth player out with injury.

Matthew Willenborg led the Bronchos on Tuesday with 19 points in 37 minutes on the floor. He was 7-for-17, including a 3-for-10 mark from behind the 3-point line, and 2-for-2 at the free-throw line. Willenborg added seven rebounds, three blocked shots, and three steals.

Marcus Zeigler Jr. added 14 points and Parker Hannah scored 13. They each made three 3-pointers like Willenborg did. UCO also got eight points from Jack Robinson, five from Ben Averitt, two from Brady Hancuff, and one from Chase Sucharda.

Central Oklahoma trailed by double digits in the first half, including a 12-point deficit with 2:13 remaining, 35-23. It was 17 points in the second half, 50-33, with 14:14 remaining. But the Bronchos didn't quit.

UCO cut the lead to six points, 68-62, when Hancuff made a pair of free-throws with 30 seconds remaining. But it was too late. St. Mary's hit a pair of free-throws and made a fastbreak layup to end the game up by 10 points.

St. Mary's was No. 7 in the country entering the week. The latest coaches' poll has the Rattlers No. 13 in the country. St. Edward's had been as high as No. 10 in the country and was 14 last week before dipping to 16th on Tuesday.
