UCO Survives Gorillas In Home Finale

No. 7 Bronchos Turn Back Pittsburg State in Five-set Thriller

EDMOND – There were clutch performances all around for Central Oklahoma as the No. 7-ranked Bronchos got past Pittsburg State in a five-set struggle Friday night at Hamilton Field House in the home finale.

UCO conquered the Gorillas 15-25, 25-16, 25-20, 20-25, 15-6 in a back-and-forth battle that saw plenty of huge momentum swings. It was the sixth straight win for the Bronchos, who improved to 25-3 overall and 11-3 in the league.

"Pitt gave us a lot of problems with their blocking, but we found a way to get it done," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Our girls are a resilient group and they just refused to lose.

"We made a lot of mistakes and it was a struggle all night, but we really stepped up in the fifth set. That was a big win in a match that easily could have gotten away from us."

Riley Roberts and Kaitlyn Parrott had huge outings to lead the Bronchos.

Roberts collected a career-high 29 digs while adding four kills, four assists, three service aces and one assisted block. Parrott served up three of her career-best six aces in the decisive fifth set in addition to digging up 25 attacks and making five assists.

Plenty of others came up big in the key win.

Sydney Huck knocked down a match-high 18 kills with three assisted blocks, Lari Migliorino hit .450 with 12 kills and Mikiah Perdue had nine kills with eight total blocks. Setter supreme Lindsey Houran handed out 41 assists after a slow start to go along with a season-high 23 digs and three kills.

The match came down to the fifth set and PSU opened with a kill before making a service error to tie it. Next up to serve for the Bronchos was Parrott and she drilled two straight aces down the line to put UCO on top to stay.

Huck followed with a kill off a Roberts feed, Parrott delivered another ace and a Pitt State error made it 6-1. The Gorillas scored, but Huck answered with consecutive kills and then a remarkable diving dig by Morgan Manning kept alive a rally that Houran ended with a kill to put UCO on top 9-2.

PSU had no chance to come back after that sequence and the Bronchos went on to finish off the dominating closing-set win.

Central got off to a rough start in dropping the first set and trailed for large portions of the second before coming back. The Bronchos were down 14-12, but got three blocks and a kill from Perdue in closing with a 13-2 run to take the win.

It was close again in the third set, with Huck and Migliorini combining five kills during a 9-3 spurt that turned a 13-12 deficit into a 21-16 lead and UCO stayed safely ahead the rest of the way.

The Gorillas rebounded in the fourth set to tie the match and set the stage for the dramatic finale that the Bronchos dominated for their 12th win in their last 13 five-set matches over the past three seasons.

UCO ends the regular season next week with matches at Emporia State and Washburn, with the MIAA Volleyball Championships set for Nov. 20-22 in St. Joseph, Mo.
