Five-set Phenoms!

No. 7 UCO Rallies For Improbable Road Win Over No. 24 Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kansas – Something about playing five-set matches seems to agree with Central Oklahoma.

The No. 7-ranked Bronchos overcame a 2-0 deficit to pull out an improbable five-set MIAA victory over No. 24 Emporia State Thursday night, surviving 15-25, 19-25, 25-20, 30-28, 15-9 in a three-hour marathon.

It was the 13th win in the last 14 five-set matches over the past three years for UCO, which improved to 26-3 overall and 12-3 in the league. The Bronchos move on to Topeka, Kansas Friday for another big conference match with No. 8 Washburn in the regular season finale.

"What a match," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We struggled offensively in the first two sets, but didn't get down on ourselves and just kept battling. A lot of players stepped up and made some big-time plays the last three sets.

"It was a huge win for us and now we have to get ready for another big match tomorrow."

Mikiah Perdue led the way, hitting .387 with 17 kills and five errors in 31 attacks to go along with four total blocks. She had eight of those kills in the key fourth-set win.

Lari Migliorino collected 11 kills and five total blocks, while Riley Roberts had an impressive all-around outing with nine kills, 19 assists, 17 digs and four total blocks.

The Bronchos also got seven kills from Myla Unterweger, with Kedron Burk, Sawyer Franz and Sydney Huck chipping in five apiece. Burk also had five total blocks.

Lindsey Houran handed out 34 assists in addition to having 22 digs and four kills. Kaitlyn Parrott dug up 25 Emporia attacks and served up three aces.

The Hornets appeared in control after taking the first two sets, but UCO roared back to tie it and then seized control early in the deciding fifth set.

Unterweger had two kills, Houran another and Roberts a solo block to spark a 6-0 run that gave UCO an 8-2 lead and it was 10-3 after a Migliorino kill. ESU got within 11-7 before Perdue had two kills down the stretch to put it away.

Emporia cruised in taking the first set and overcame a four-point UCO lead in winning the second to put the Bronchos on the ropes.

But Central responded in the third set, getting six kills from Migliorino in staying alive. Roberts had two kills as the Bronchos broke away from an 18-18 tie to take the 25-20 win that gave UCO new hope.

The Bronchos then overcame a 14-8 deficit in the fourth set, with Perdue leading the charge. A Roberts kill tied the set at 19-all, it was 20-20 after Parrott's first kill of the season and UCO went up 24-22 on a Perdue slam.

Emporia came back to tie it at 24, then went ahead 26-25. A Perdue kill tied it again, then Parrott's ace put the Bronchos on top 27-26. The Hornets scored two straight to go up 28-27, but UCO scored the final three points.

Burk and Migliorino teamed up for a block to start that match-saving spurt, Migliorino followed with a kill and Roberts' shot down the middle ended the thrilling 30-28 win to set the stage for yet another five-set victory by the Bronchos.
