Bronchos Sweep Newman On Senior Night

Central Oklahoma Cruises To 3-0 Win In Edmond Thursday Night

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma rolled to a senior night sweep Thursday when the Bronchos beat Newman 3-0 at Hamilton Field House.

UCO improved to 24-3 on the season with the win, its fifth in a row. The Bronchos are 10-3 in the MIAA following the win.

"We did what we needed to tonight," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "There were a lot of good things we didn't but it wasn't perfect. It's good to get a win on senior night and to celebrate a great class of young ladies that have done so much for this program."

Senior Sydney Huck led the Bronchos with 11 kills and played just two sets. Senior Lindsey Houran directed Huck and the offense with 36 assists in three sets. Houran led the offense that landed 40 kills in the three-set sweep. Kaitlyn Parrott led the defense with 21 digs in three sets. UCO had five total blocks and four aces, including Parrott's match-ending ace.

The first set win didn't come easy. UCO broke a 9-9 tie with a run to get out in front, but Newman brought it back to a one-point match on three different occasions down the stretch. The last was 21-20 before a 4-1 run ended it. Back-to-back errors by Newman and back-to-back kills by Huck gave UCO the 25-21 win.

Central went on a 7-1 run early in the second to gain a big lead and never looked back in earning a 25-13 second-set win. While UCO had a big lead again in the third, Newman got it to five late in the set but couldn't overcome Central's power. The Bronchos won 25-17 to clinch the match.

Huck had 11 kills on 31 attacks with just three errors, a .258 hitting percentage. She reached double-digit kills for the 73rd time in her illustrious career Thursday night.

Freshman Myla Unterweger landed eight kills and hit .412 with only one error on 17 attacks. Unterweger landed five kills in the third set to polish off the win for the Bronchos.

A pair of seniors that were also celebrated Thursday night were big on offense. Mikiah Perdue had seven kills while hitting .313 in the match. Kedron Burk had five kills while hitting .250. Burk added one solo and two assisted blocks. Lari Migliorino was also among the senior night celebration and had one kill and two blocks on Thursday.

Central Oklahoma does have one more home game left tomorrow night against Pittsburg State. The Bronchos host the Gorillas at 6 p.m. at Hamilton Field House. UCO closes out the regular season next week at Emporia State and Washburn.
